Oxygen Sensor Removal

Its time to replace the oxygen sensors. I know a lot of other people have replaced theirs by themselves. I've never removed these sensor on any car before. Can anyone give me a little how-to on how to remove the sensors? Anything I should look out for? I'm buying new sensors from www.oxygensensors.com.

Not to hard, just get some PB Blaster spray it on the old o2 sensors and let it soak overnight. Give it a good soaking and a little heat helps, mabey take it for a spin before you remove them or a propane torch works well. Make sure you use the correct size wrench and when you put the new ones in clean the rust out of the threads and coat them with anti-seize lube. Be careful not to get it in the sensor, just on the threads. When you put the new ones in don't plug the wire back in until you have tightened the sensor down, it prevents the wires from twisting up.

P.S. Do not over tighten or cross thread, finger tighten them first.

I forgot to mention the plugs for the wires, they are a little tough to un do. You can do this from the top of the engine, they are on the left and right sides of the back of the engine.

I use a small flat head screw driver to unlock the O2 connectors. the "tang" has to be moved out for release. I find these connectors to be very time consumming and difficult even after having taken them off several times and other suby's too. Sometimes 2 minutes and other times 20 minutes. It must be me.

That's odd.

When I removed mine, each of the three wires from the sensor had a separate little bullet connector which clicked into a plastic housing. It was quite easy to remove them, however reconnection was tricky because they could potentially be connected in the wrong order.

I found it difficult to connect the wires with the sensors installed because isn't much slack. It's much easier to connect the wires first, then twist up them up anti-clockwise so that they untwist as you screw in the sensor.

Its done! The new sensors are in place and the car is running great. Thanks for all the help. Now I have to go through another tank to see how my gas mileage is.
