spark plug wires?

I 'd noticed a slight performance and mileage drop recently, and decided to have my mechanic do a tune-up. Per earlier postings, I ordered NGK Iridiums.
He requested spark plug wires as well, and I ordered them from subarupartsonline.com. I found out this morning that they come attached to the coils, not separately, at about $80/each!!
Ouch. $480 is a much larger nut, and still buys a lot of gas.

Any comments? I have 85k miles on my well cared for 96 LSi.
Can the wires be separated from the coils and an aftermarket be used? Do I really need these?

Our svxi DO NOT have spark plug wires per se, take the coils back and find a mechanic that has a clue!!!!!!!!!!!!

They come as a complete unit. When doing a tune up, you don't usually replace the "wires" like that. they are left alone unless there is arching going on or the boot of the plug wire is torn. Have him do the plug replacement first and if he tears any of the plug boots, you have a wire and coil already. If not maybe you can send them back.
