well i replaced the drivers side wheel bearing abought 2 years ago when i got the car, now the left bearing went bad, i had it replaced 3 weeks ago. and well its bad again !!!!!i hear a huming sounds coming from the back pasanger side, i know this sound well. why could it go bad in 3 weeks? did the shop put it in wrong?
i got the bearing from a freinds at discount autoparts for like 55.00 at there price, should i have gone with a factory subaru one? and the shop charged 60.00 labor to install it.. what should i do , has any one had this hapen,, ?

You should probably get the subaru dealer to do it since they warranty parts and labor. You should definitely search up wheel bearings on the board lots of threads should come up.

Solar,
This is a finickity job to do, esp with wrong or inadequate tools. Best advice: if the new bearing is only in three weeks and is now making noise, then it is likely they botched the job, put in wrong or no grease, damaged the outer seal, or most likely of all, while using the press to drive out the old bearing, they ovalled your hub and/or damaged the seal surface. This last one might require a new hub, no way of knowing without taking it apart again, and measuring it for trueness. Go back immediately and let them hear it, explain the job was not a success. No bearing goes bad that quick, factory quality or otherwise. The bearing is either running dry, or under stress in an oval housing, probably both. In any event, the fault is theirs, not yours. Go back straight away, and get a copy of the technical bulletins on bearing replacement that Randy or some of the guys would have in their lockers. This is to help them correct the problem, not to give them the impression that you think they know nothing. Best of luck Joe

My guess would be that they thought the stuff it came packed in was grease. It is not. The bearing should have been repacked in a quality grease before installation.
If you don't do it yourself, I don't, try to find a dealer who knows how to replace the bearing correctly. I had several replace by a Subaru dealer until I found a Subaru dealer that did it right. That was over 100,000 miles ago.

failed again
Ask if they used a press
If yes, you are 75% of the way to learn the reason why... There are many other recent threads on the intricacies of bearing installation hotshoe |
