Any way to tell that, without pulling the engine?
Pull the starter and try and see?

Well, I guess it doesnt matter either way. If its broke, I have to pull the engine to replace. If its not, I have to pull the engine to replace that.

There is an access for visual inspection of the flex plate underneath the car. You can use the mounting hole for the starter if you like.

yes actually, through the hole where you put in the flex plate bolts. stick you finger in there and, reach over the top of the flexplate stretch till you feel the round surface of the torque converter. try to push it back or side to side, if the torque converter moves, you have a broken flex plate. if you don't have small girlish hands like mine you can pull the starter and check for movement there as well.
hope this helps.
