Personally, I just say "thanks", I'd feel a little odd walking through an airports signing like I'm talking to a deaf person. But as long as the message gets across, whatever works

And be called an 'other' or 'civilian'. It makes me feel uneasy to be referred to that way. Maybe gratitude isn't reciprocal around here.

I just saw this now.
I am sure that most of the SVX community has just missed it. With my firstborn now in the service, still at boot camp, I have mixed emotions. I have heard from our SVX family members the message to tell my son Dave that they are proud of him. I have heard from casual business people who have never met him the same thing. Freedom is not free. I was never in the service. I am familiar with the arts of war. And I thank all of those who have served. I just wish it was not necessary. But the world is filled with so many people, who can not see the forest for the trees. Why can't we just all get along.

I live in a military town, and I have nothing but respect for service men (or personal being political correct). I do appreciate what they do for this country. I show much thanks every time I see one.

Wow, times sure have changed. Thankfully for the better.
I live close to 2 bases. One Army, the other Air Force. Last week I saw a serviceman in fatigues with a cane at a Taco Del Mar I went to. I bought him lunch. Its taken almost 30yrs to get my thanks/gratitude. I almost gave up.

My story and what this can mean.
I was at a church service on the Sunday before Veterans Day, and the pastor asked all of the Veterans to please stand. I did with others that had served in the Military. About 2 weeks later, after another service, a woman came up to me and asked if I had stood up at the service when the Veterans were recognized. She said that she thought she recognized me. I said that I had. She shook my hand and said how much she appreciated my service, and then left. I stood there in shock. I had never been thanked personally for my service. It made more difference than I would have ever thought. I will never forget that unselfish act of gratitude and it changed my life. Never think that something so simple will not make a difference in a persons life. It will, and I hope you will feel better about it too.
