The alternator should be removed from the car and tested on a bench that can check for faulty diodes. This was done to mine and the diode problem was clear as day.

Check out this discussion for instructions on how-to rebuild the SVX alternator. Beav also tells you how and where to buy the parts. I located the parts locally and rebuilt mine for $75 last year and it is still going strong. http://tinyurl.com/ybfvse

I am not surprised, as most auto electrical set ups do not know their ass from ac or dc. If there is a DC output all is OK, never mind a compliment of reverse voltage.
