What is it and do we need it?

Over the weekend me and Ben did the Valve Cover Gaskets and Water Pump Gaket on the racecar. While looking at other things under the hood we got to wondering about the large black canister between the ABS pump and the radiator...

I'm guessing something to do with fuel vapor?? What happens if we eliminate it and loop one of the tubes and just yank the canister out.

It seemed to run fine while we had it idleing away with the tube looped back. Any good reasons while we should put it back in place?

It vents the vapor from the fuel tank....

I've seen many a car with them removed, but I generally keep them on mine (of course I'm not trying to get mine the lightest possiable)

The main purpose of the canister is emissions and fuel economy. It recycles fuel vapors from the tank. Not sure if there would be any problems removing it.

Cool... it's gone (well sitting in Ben's Baement) until we notice any problems. Since this is for the race car and will be lucky to see 200 miles a year neither mileage nor emissions are of great concern
