Most are using either the B&M 70255 or 70286. I also have a perma cool 12511 with electric fan installed in the fender.
Basically - get the biggest one you can fit in there. Do a search for tranny cooler and you will find many threads on them.

Anyone running a digital readout temp gauge?
I saw a nice one in Summit racing's catalog, but not sure it will mount to the perma cool filter unit. Normally people are using mechanical needle gauges right |

I used to run one from Dakota Digital. It fit ok in the coin holder location and someone put it in their ashtray.

I'm getting a 15,000lb GVW tranny cooler this weekend to put in series with the factory one in the radiator. I'm sure these two coolers will be more than sufficient to keep my ATF temps nice and cool even on a hot summer day!
I plan on installing this new cooler at the same time I put in the 4.444 '97 Legacy 4EAT. -Chike

Chike you should also look into getting a temp gauge for the tranny too. Someone reported their temps reaching the 200's even with a cooler . The only other person who had my cooler in their SVX had a gauge and never reported temps over 180. What is the normal temps for tranny's?

I have 2 coolers and still I could bury the needle on the temp guage if I wanted to. It all depends on what road conditions you are driving.
Take a trip through the dragon or climb a steep mountain at 30mph and you are going to heat up the tranny. As long as the torque converter is unlocked you are building heat. The only time I can watch the temp drop is cold weather, stopped at a stoplight, or torque converter locked in steady driving.

I may look into getting a temp guage if I ever do race track driving. Lee reported having tranny temps ~10* cooler when he switched from the stock 3.55's to 4.11 gears. I'm switching to even shorter 4.44's now. These short gears, coupled with two tranny coolers in series (factory & 15,000lb GVW) should be more than adequate to keep my trans cool in most driving situations. I also plan to change the internal filter inside of my new trans at the time of installation. This way, I'll know everything is in tip-top shape! -Chike

Last time my car was in a group drive with some WRX, STI, GC8, 350Z and others. The Trany temp was over 220 it was about 70 out that day. The driving was hills and corners at higher then normal speeds .
I was running smallcar shift kit. B&M cooler 16,000 gvw Permacool filter auto meter temp guage

Wow over 220 and running a cooler and filter? Something had to be wrong...the person who ran my cooler in series in his SVX used to drive it hard all the time and his temps never went above 180.

Dragracing isn't actually that bad for the tranny temp. Onbe quick shot and its over with. Constant use of lower gears under load is about the worst - like what you would encounter on a very long autocross course or climbing a mountain at 30mph. If an svx was driven under these conditions and the temp gauge didn't pass 180 I would guess that the gauge was installed after the coolers instead of before.

No, what I mean is the flow of tranny fluid was going into the coolers before it hit the tranny temp sensor. This would give a false low reading.
