RACK/PINION...New, Rebuilt..or rebuild mine
I thot I had a valve cover oil leak on the driver side which is dripping (oil) on the exhaust (manifold) pipes and creating almost constant (low level) SMOKE!
I couldn't figure out the leak...but I did the Beav O-ring trick (between vc bolts and their washers...to push more against the vc gasket to see if that helps) and it still would smoke a little from fluid dripping on the exhaust. Today I took to mechanic who placed dye in the engine oil recently...He said that there is no oil leak! He believes it is power steering fluid (ATF) dripping on the exhaust FROM THE RACK/PINION POWER STEERING UNIT! What should I do...gentlemen? Buy a NEW?...REBUILT?...or REBUILD MY OWN? Please advise...I'M LOST IN THIS REALM OF MY BEAST [Otherwise..All is well with my groovy SVX!] THANKS! for any help you can give...

The lines from the rack to the pump frequently develop leaks. Check those before you go tearing out the whole steering system. Could just be an O-ring.
[Oops. You said driver's side. Guess it is the rack, then. Sorry...] |

Gee, look at all those caps and bold letters. You love drama, don't you?
The transmisson cooler lines run above the left side of the rack, make certain they aren't the culprits. Racks are not difficult to rebuild, especially if they are just leaking. As with any repair it depends on your skill level. Sometimes remans are not very expensive so just shop around.
