Manual trans Conversion on FWD
I've seen the conversions all over this site for the AWD cars but not for the FWD. Any suggestions where to get the trans for the swap from....?

Hi, don't know why no one has answered this one. I would think that any manual trans, out of any front wheel drive Subie would fit. You just have to pick which final drive ratio you want to use. Some body else can tell you which trans has which ratios. But it would work. Harvey.

I'm also working on a 5-speed FWD project- well sort of. Mine will end up sitting amidship in a Corvair driving the rear wheels!
Anyway, you will encounter the same issues as the AWD cars. The same trannies (in FWD configurations), drive ratios, and issues (like if the tranny is strong enough to pull around the SVX). Technically, the 4EAT was Subaru's strongest tranny in the '90's. That's why it's all they offered on the SVX. The manuals are all a little weak to be pulling around an SVX. The good news is that once the conversion is complete, replacement and repair become MUCH easier. So, you will be looking for a FWD tranny from a Legacy, Impreza, Forester, etc. It was not designed to pull the weight of the SVX, but your future maintenance will be easier. You'll need someone smarter than me to talk about specific gear ratios and model years. Good Luck!

You have to get a FWD tranny out of a Early Impreza or early Legacy to make it work...the Loyal has a different bellhousing....

Same years as the AWDs and I assume the same ratios?

The FWD for the Legacy and Impreza was available from 90-95...I'm guessing they're all 4.11's...but don't know for sure

Do you want to keep it FWD? Because you could easily convert it to AWD, which would allow a much larger selection of transmissions...

I don't think anyone has ever done a FWD-to-AWD 5-speed swap before. It wouldn't be hard, you would just need some of the AWD parts from another SVX along with your donor car.
BTW, you have a PM .

I know that in the Autos the fwd compared to the AWD trannie on the same car had a higher final drive ratio. I would either pull one from a legacy or impreza there the same trannie throught the years, and modles pretty much. The FWD 5spd conversion would only be easier, just follow the AWD instructions minus the drive shaft extendind, rear end ratio swap. I am almost 100% certain there almost identical. |

It would be exactly like my write up without the rear diff and driveshaft stuff....the trannys and cables are the same (minus the driveshaft yoke)
