Exchange 2003

Anyone have any thoughts on Microsoft Exchange, 2003 in particular?

We have a basic pop server for e-mail and are looking at upgrading. But man, exchange is really a beast.

Any advice, thoughts, or words of wisdom?

Don't go there. If this a corporate email system, I'd recommend looking for an IMAP email server that also supports some sort of webmail interface too.

I use Kerio Mail Server. It supports IMAP, POP3/SMTP, SSL, webmail, secure webmail, spam filtering, virus scanning...basically everything.

Thanks

I'll take a look at it.
I found an application called Mdaemon that looks really good that I am considering.

I use it for my home. I love it. But for full blown office (over 500 people), you will want something more managable than that.

But I love the new outlook web interface. That is nice. I can have all the reminders and such pop up just like regular outlook 2k3.

It is a pain to configure and Migration from 2000 is a pain too.

If I were to go with Exchange, it would be a fresh install. We are using a POP3 mail program now, and it's just not getting it done.

I went to a day seminar, a loadfest, on exchange 2003 last week and was just overwhelmed. I had never seen it before so it was definitely over my head. I know I could pick it up once I figured out Microsofts terminology and the basic structure.

If you are using exchange, and starting from scratch, it's fine. I am not an Exchange God but it has been pretty reliable for me considering that it's running on a PII 350 with 392MB RAM.

The box is also running win2k3, SQL Server 2k, mySQL, and doing my DC as well as my DNS.

Holy crap!!

How long does it take to boot up with all that stuff on it?

I had a P4 3.2 Ghz w/ 1 GB of RAM running a demo of 2k3 and exchange 2003 and it akes at least 10 minutes to boot.

Takes about a minute or two or so. The longest is when it is doing it's network settings for DC.

It takes about 5 minutes to shutdown (correctly). If you did not shut it down correctly, I'll take a good 5-8 minutes to boot.
