Noise from rear end (bearings/tires)?
OK, I have a 92LS-L, no fluid leaks. No weird behavior. Lately I think I'm hearing a subtle increase in noise coming from the back. It definitely increases in rate (not volume) as the speed increases. Like a tire whine would... It's just that the car seems a tad noisier while cruising along. I'm not sure if it's a tire noise, bearings or what... We've had a ton of snow, so I've driven through a lot of slush/road salt this past winter. I can say that while driving through a tunnel and rolling down a window, you can't hear anything unusual at all. You just hear it from inside the car, but again it's subtle. My tires are about 7months old (TOYO Proxes FZ4) I was thinking it's maybe because the tires are colder, due to low temps, but I don't know if that's even relevant. Perhaps something that's just starting to go? Any thoughts?

Tires, BEARINGS or ?
I'm not a mechanic, but I test drove an SVX with TOYO tires that the owner explained was the reason for the loud noise while in motion (louder at faster speeds)!? You should be familiar with the tire noise by now though! One likely possibility is rear bearings (common failure):
My car is getting louder (esp. over 40 mph) and has been diagnosed by the dealer as needing rear bearings. It's getting louder gradually with time. I'm getting ready to replace the rear bearings with OEM parts using HuBTaMER tool when it arrives by mail. [Use better bearing replacement part if it has been located by the time you do yours because stock part is inadequate design.] Shade tree mechanic here! I'm sure others will comment,

Sounds like its probably a bearing.
Can't comment on the better bearing issue, you may just have to make due with OEM bearings for now. Yes there is rumour of an alternate bearing, but it requires machining of your hubs to make it fit. If you install(press the bearings in true) them right, and torque properly, and perhaps check them after about 5k, the bearing should last for a while.

P.S. I know Subaru is paying you guys off, so they'll get to sell all their crappy OEM bearings first! P.P.S. Are they having to machine the hubs for the upgrades their supposedly doing in Canada for their SVX's? P.P.P.S. Details, PLEASE! I can't stand it!

Too funny,
I had the same mysterious noise, went to a dealer, he replaced mine. Read 400+ stories on the forum about bear issues and optional bearings from other subaru's, and was told by another member that you can put in another bearing. But I have not seen any proof...yet. As for Canada, Apparently Subaru of Canada has recognised the bearing issue and has compensated owners under warrantee. I have no other info on how. My bearing was done in the US, so I just paid for the bearing swap, no hub, but I know my car has hubs as part of the previous bearing repairs. And I have not followed up with SKF on the bearing recently, as I do not have a bearing to give them. If I can get all the specs of the bearing, then we may get somewhere. James, do you have a spare bearing? Or did you swap out your bearing yet? I know you've got the HubTamer coming. so If you have your new bearing in hand, maybe we could do some measurements?

The NTN number is -- 4T - CRI - 08A02. Several other brands are available from dedicated bearing supply specialists.
I have been informed by the local suppliers of Subaru parts ( They are a genuine and very helpfull lot ) that there should be no problems in obtaining rear wheel bearings for some time as several current models are fitted with identical and equivalent bearings. This would indicate that there could indeed be an improved bearing in the parts bin and the thing to do would be to order on the equivelent part no. rather than the SVX no. so as not to get supplied the original type ex old stock. Some research is called for in this regard and could be well worthwhile.

Yes, I have the new OEM bearings (rear). I've had them for at least 6 to 9 months (as I got distracted with my little rough idle/shudder problem). I don't have a micrometer, but sure I could borrow one. Let me know if I can help! [I don't want to put back in an "inadequate, poorly engineered" product if I can help it!]

Hubs?
Chris, Did you say your hubs were replaced or not?
Trevor, I thought that the main problem with this bearing was size and design (svx vs.forrester style) and not necessarily quality? Would that bearing number you presented result in the same design bearing OR a different design (better) that would merely fit?
