Auto transmission swap...

Today, I found out that my awd is not working properly, the rear wheels are delayed (start a few seconds after the front wheels start rolling)...is this because of the transmission? and also I do not know how to drive standard so i was wondering if i could swap my stock tranny with a legacy, outback or imprezza?

Well I think that if the rear wheels are delayed a little it is okay. I assume you had all four wheels off the ground when you did this. The rear wheels did spin at the same speed as the front wheels?

The rear wheels started to turn only at about 40-50 km/h and i am pretty sure that they were moving slower than the front..

Yes your rear wheel drive is not working properly.

Now if Huck will come along and answer the question about the wiring connections for a Legacy vs SVX transmission you will be in good shape. Can the SVX TCU be used?

I do know that you need the rear dif from the Legacy, we are talking used here, and it is geared lower than the SVX so it should accelerate faster.

I do not know but it would be interesting to find out if a new transmission will fit and work in the SVX.

If you get a tranny out of a Legacy or Impreza of about the same year, the connections and TCU should work, but you will need the matching rear diff, and flywheel.

Why the flywheel Huck, is it different to the SVX?

Harvey.

Hey Harvey,
Yes it is different, The torque converter on the SVX is bigger than the ones on the other Subarus, and it takes a different Flexplate to match the TC, if one were to get the SVX TC rebuilt, they could use it in the Legacy tranny and retain the SVX Flexplate.
I wouldn't recommend using the SVX TC without a rebuild, as it will have debris from the bad tranny in it (don't want to gum up the new tranny, do we )

hmm... if you want to change the transmission, why don't you think of it as a great time to learn how to drive a standard? unless you're stuck in traffic more than 60 percent of the time driving, i think a 5 speed is way more fun to drive than an auto...

Maybe its me or something but why swap out the whole trans if it's working fine other than the rear wheel power transfer. I would think you could probably just have the transfer clutches rebuilt, the trans flushed, and fluid replaced. Or just use it as an oppertunity to swap in a 5 speed.

That is not normal. I did this to my 97 OBS, 91 Legacy and 92 SVX before and after I fixed the RWD. When the rear wheels do not spin with all tires off the ground the AWD is not working.

If you do not fix the RWD the front dif may also need to be replaced. Under heavy acceleration it will overload the FWD unless you put it in FWD mode.

When I did this, with all four wheels off the ground, all four wheels would spin with the engine at idle speed. I do not remember what the speedometer said.

You said this before:
The rear wheels started to turn only at about 40-50 km/h and i am pretty sure that they were moving slower than the front..

Maybe you should get it checked again.

Carlito - what dealer are you bringing the car to? Unfortunately as I found out there aren't very many Subaru dealers who actually know what they are doing.
