Resurrected!

I did a search and resurrected the thread because I had the same question involving the FWD vs AWD diff. I actually posted in it to get confirmation. As you can see I got the results that I needed. Updated information. I did not rely soley on the information from the original posts. I am just now trying to decide what to do. I have two good and complete (extra) trannies and one bad FWD tranny. Also, one newly rebuilt tranny in the car I just bought, but with a bad front differential. Maybe I can talk my nephew out of the differential on the bad tranny that went along with the car I sold him since I gave him a good one to replace it with------hummmmm.

Just be aware, the two most common problems with the front differentials are as follows...

The pinion bearing takes a crap due to high mileage of lack of fluid (leaky seals and no one remembers to check the diff fluid because it is on the opposite side. In this case it will wear out the pinion or ring gear down to razor like surfaces which will break and cause the diff to fail

OR I have found in a few cases that the spider gears take a crap in which case the carrier is probobly shot but finding a carrier is easy since most all Version I 4EAT's have the same carrier just different ring and pinion gears.

So in short, if you front diff is bad check for these two things. If you buy a used ring and pinion, make sure the pinion bearing is good. If it is the carrier, you are in luck, they are cheap and easy to find but be sure the pressed carrier bearings are good and that the spider gears move smoothly... Hope this helps and good luck in resurecting your tranny

Tom

Thanks for the info. It does help even though I am still really trying to decide which way to go. First of all, I have to get my shop manuals back before I do much of anything.

This is the car in question. (the silver one)
