5 speed problem...please help!

So....here is where it starts. The extension fit in after my mechanic had to have it modified to bolt in,it appears it was inadvertantly unfinished, but i now have reason to believe it may be too long as well. When you rev the car in neutral, no vibration occurs at all. But when you start to accelrate, there is a tapping sound that occurs intermittantly and seems to be at your feet, so obivously its the driveshaft tapping on the floor of the car, depending on how much throttle you give it. the driveshaft is properly installed, as we did it 2 times to make sure.
my scenerio to help explain:
:while cruising at speed:
It does not occur while cruising at speed off the throttle in gear(which means the driveshaft is spinning with the speed of the car and no vibration or tapping is occuring), and with low throttle it does not occur at all in higher gears. With alittle more throttle, say driving 30 in third gear, it will begin to rather intermittantly make a tapping sound, which with more throttle speeds up into a thump. My thinking is, the driveshaft is to long, so that when the drivetrain tourqes on the knuckes, the shaft is bowing and cuasing the tap/ thump on the floor. I know its not the clutch(new ACT 2600 kit) its deinftly a driveshaft issue IMO, and the trans, along with every other aspect is beutifull.
hopefully someone can help me out with my diag,
phil

I don't know about bowing, but maybe it's just hitting the floor or the shift linkage when the tranny mount stretches, they can move a lot under load. What it the peace that you had to fix?

hmm

I have the STi mount, so it shouldnt be moving a whole lot, it defintly feels like its hitting the floor under load. Im just curious why im the only one running into this problem, figures...
What would you do if you were running into this problem?
phil
p.s. here is the pic of the driveshaft extension when i first got it:

What did you do to relocate the carrier bearing? I'd check it to be sure it's secure.
I used a spacer to, but plan on getting a 2-piece drive shaft, and have it legthened, once I replace my clutch with a better one.

Let us know what you find out.

Huck,
I called brian, had a little talk with him, he seems to think its an interference with the drivetrain and exhuast system/mounts, im going to have to go back in on fri and check all areas around the driveshaft/trans. Im planning on going for the two piece shaft as well

Could it be possible that perhaps the driveshaft, with the extension, is now out of balance? That would explain why it would get worse with speed.

Probably not, because the extension bolts to the rear diff, and he said he's hearing the tapping near his feet, so it's probably like Brian said, [an interference with the drivetrain and exhuast system/mounts].

Hope you get it resolved soon

Just to get this strait. You got the small car kit right?

It comes with a spacer for the drive shaft?

And what DID you use to relocate the carrier?

Ah, OK, I was thinking the extension would have mounted to the front of the driveshaft. Thanks for the clarification

Small car took care of everything, the kit was very impressive, I recieved the rearend(with 4.11s) and everything ready to throw in....now i just need to get the small kinks worked out. Goto my locker to see the pics of the kit,
I took the car to school with me, its amazing the condition of this car even with 170k miles. It drives smoother then my honda(80k) and if you can get over the door dings, is really a pretty car to look at. I dont know how many times i took the car out this week just to cruise around, Im just glad i now have something to live for......ive been quite depressed lately, as i hate it here at my college, and all my friends are off at their colleges, and ive been having problems with my longterm girlfriend(5 years) so this was a great release to me, to have this car being one step closer. Now its time to start looking for a decent low milage engine
