<<If you go to a site that uses legitimate pop ups simply click on the icon again and temporarily disable the killer.>>

More and more sites are starting to use popups for legitimate use. I usually fill out a feedback form telling them they are making my life more difficult just to appease someone going for a certain look.

I unfortunately get more frustrated at having to unlock the popups to get at real data than to get upset at ad popups so I have abandoned the popup blockers.

Lwin,

That picture of IE7 is a fake. See here:

http://www.winbeta.org/modules.php?n...rticle&sid=356

Regarding popups, there will be no popup stopper in IE7 (which has *not* been released yet) but there will be limits on what popups can do (no full screen and multiple popups etc). At least, that is what is being reported by the tech sites.

That's pretty funny. I'll have to show this one to Amy. She'll get a kick out of it.

44% is too dang low. What all are you running???

Try running MSCONFIG and going to the startup tab to disable some stuff.

I know it's too darn low! Here's a list of what loads when I boot up. You tell me what to lose.

Task scheduler (Yeah, okay, I could lose that.)
Volume control
Adaptec Direct Drive CD Wizard (? - Hadn't thought about that one. It's a definate possibility, being my E drive.)
Roxio Go Back (Just got that - it doesn't seem to affect too much.)
CallWave
Earthlink Update Manager (I keep getting shed of that, but everytime Earthlink talks me into an update, it comes back!)
ZoneAlarm (Hog - but a necessary hog.)
Norton A/V (Ditto above)
That's it. I used to run TClockEx, but that really IS a hog!

By the way, I just started up, and my resources are at 42%. If I fire up Popup Stopper (which is what I meant to say I used instead of AdAware - which is just a Spyware hunter), they'll go to 39%.

If you can give some tips - please do!

Cheese! I just brought up my System config. There's stuff in there that I had no idea was opening up. What the heck is LDM (Desktop Messenger - BackWeb? - huh?)?

Steve,

I'd disable the LDM thru MSCONFIG and see if it affects anything. As far as I can determine, it's spyware.

Also, what's your system specs? If you have a Pentium 166 with 16Mb, I won't blame you for having 44% resources used. But if the system is current or near, it shouldn't be. What O/S are you running?

I would also consider getting rid of GoBack. I haven't heard much positive things about it.

I use this: www.pestpatrol.com (cootie approved) for rogue scripts etc., along with www.zonealarm.com for a firewall and Norton System AV. There's a lot of wierd stuff floating around. B.

Yeah, and just like the Pop-Ups we're talking about here, it's no fun poppin' up if you're only gonna get shut down.

Thanks David and Victor,
I went in and disabled a bunch of stuff (I tried to be discriminating, but it was kinda fun anyway) and when I restarted, I was at 84. Of course, with both Outlook and IE up I'm now down to 58 - but that's real good for my computer.

I've got a 3 YO Dell, 600Mhz PIII, 100Mhz bus, 256 Meg SDRam.

My wife has a 2 YO Gateway, 933 PIII, which opens just about everything in the box at startup, and generally has resources in the 80's. It's discouraging, that's what it is.

Well, Larry. If it's one thing I've learned from you over the last three-plus years, it's that you don't need pop-ups when you give diamonds.

Perhaps an upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP would be beneficial. Even a clean install would help.

I'm running XP on a 266MHz Celeron with 128MB RAM. It's more reliable than Win98/ME and doesn't rely as much on system resources.
