Re: Front Dif issue?

Check the tranny code close to the starter and there might be a sticker in the diff cover at the rear.... if not, the only way is to drain the oil and count ring gear teeth thru the filler plugs. Mark one with a chalk or marker and then rotate SLOWLY to count the teeth.

To convert to AWD you need an AWD trans,
a driveshaft,
an AWD rear subframe,
a rear differential
and a bunch more labor.
I've had 2 mechanics and an SVX owner rule out the "axle" theory. I don't know what this "rear subframe" is that you speak of, but the PO appears to have done all the stuff cuz it has a rear diff and the tranny was coded 4.44 (probable) by a member of this forum. I actually recorded the sound it makes, but apparently sound files (.mp3/4) are not acceptable extensions, so I can't upload for all to hear.

Re: Front Dif issue?

Hi all,
Just wanted to post an update on my tranny issue. The noise was indeed coming from the front diff, and yes, my tranny is a 4.44! The drive gear in the diff and the "worm gear" from the tranny both have broken teeth. My mech says it's a possibility the dif was run without lube. The replacement tranny is from a '97 Legacy Outback and installation is being wrapped up as of this writing. I will attempt to post a couple of pics, but, I haven't gotten the hang of that yet. Anticipating the "release" of my rig today or tomorrow. I want to thank everyone who took an interest, and offered advice and encouragement! You know who you are, Thank You! . Hope everyone had a happy and safe memorial day holiday!

Re: Front Dif issue?

I did not think the 97 outback was a 4:44

Re: Front Dif issue?

I was advised by another member that the '97 "Legacy" outback would be a good match for the swap and would be a 4.44. Another step closer to becoming a card carrying SVX "Road Ranger"

Thanks! Happy to be aboard. Had the car detailed Sunday, getting her ready for The Dragon meet at the end of the month. This will actually be my second time in attendance at The Dragon, but the first time in my own vehicle. I'm really Psyched about it.
