Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Thanks for the update Tom. Yea, I would go a bit stir crazy. He needs a small generator. Best wishes to those effected by the storm.

I hate you. Probably the truest statement ever, but still

I'm alive and well. We still have no power, internet or anything. Probably about a week out still. Keeping things going with 2 car batteries from the SVX and inverters

Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Maybe this should be retitled "Surviving Sandy".

I live in SE PA and we got a pretty good dose of Sandy. Not as much rain as expected but the winds were ferocious. There are stands of pines where easily half the trees are down. Lots of power outages still.

We were lucky, lots of branches everywhere but all the big stuff is still standing. Our power was out for 72 hours, almost to the minute. Cable was down an additional 24 hours. We live in the woods, and have had power go out A LOT over the years. Last year we finally decided that living by candlelight and washing up out of a pot was no longer a romantic part of country life and bought a generator big enough to make the house liveable. So we had power, we just had to find a gas station that also had power to keep the generator fed. It consumes 7 gallons a day; we shut it down overnight so that's about 16 hours' worth. I keep 2 days' gas on hand plus a full tank in the generator, so we could probably go 3 days without needing to make a fuel run.

I also work from home and rely on internet connectivity. So last year I did another thing -- set the house up as 'dual-homed', with two internet connections. This year, even while the power and cable were out, I had POTS phone and DSL internet.

I have coworkers in NNJ and they're still without power. My sister lives near the pine barrens, had a few trees come down across her driveway but no major damage to structures. Now I hear they're running out of gas and other important stuff. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to everyone in the harder hit areas.

To the west of us, feets of snow still has people blocked in. National Guard is using Blackhawks to locate people in the outlying areas.

I am glad our members were not hurt (that we know of) and I wish you the best of luck. It sounds like most have come through this fairly good.
