Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Is everybody checking in to SVXWN from the eastern coast? Notably the Mikes, Wikedjuggalo, and the others?

I called Mike, Longassname yesterday to see what He was going to do with his (VERY LARGE) boat.
He laughed at me for asking.
Apparently it was not a big deal to him.

What's worrying me are the people not writing anything in this thread who could chime in if they could.

Best of luck to you all.

Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Just to let you know that everything up here is fine. Not much of an event at all; more of a nuisance than terrifying. Spent a lot of time preparing and am glad I did.

I live in the middle of a LOT of trees, very, very tall and very flexible. Also down in a slight depression which offers shelter. The highest wind I recorded on my wind meter was 52 mph occasionally, with slightly higher gusts. I few branches on the deck, but all less than an inch in diameter.

Saturday, as a "test", I put 2 bricks in a large trash bag, filled the rest with styrofoam packing peanuts, closed it up and put it on the corner of the deck. This morning it was still in the same place, didn't even blow over!

We never lost power and no damage around me that I can see. There are still a lot of leaves on the trees. The SVX was parked safely in the garage.

Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Minor damage here, antenna broken off of Ebony 92 and some scratches on fenders from branches. My 97 Outback did not fare so well, the portable garage it was in went airborn, taking the 4 6x6 timers that it was secured to with it, dropping one on the outback-damaged hood, roof, drivers mirror, side trim...
Trees down everywhere, huge tree down at my parents, taking power lines with it on way down...
OTOH, everyone is alive and well, no big deal...

We are gonna be fighting over that mirror! What color is your Outback? Mine is red. Glad to hear that all the 'people' are well!

Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Safe and sound here kept power and cable. My flight was cancelled so I had a day off and the added bonus of getting out of a business trip. The downside was that the trip was to Tampa.

Re: Getting ready for Sandy

Too bad about the materials but good thing you and yours are safe, guys.

I grew up between the gulf stream and north pole, i've seen weather. On the other hand, we were always prepared in terms of magnitude.

Re: Getting ready for Sandy

We fared better in upstate NY than I thought we would. I knew they were wrong on their original rain prediction of 6 to 12 inches but 1.5 was even less than the 3 to 4 I was expecting. We lost power for a couple of hours. I was impressed that NYSEG got our power back so quickly in such high winds and driving rain.

This was faster than they expected. It drove deeper inland than they expected. It swallowed a lot of cold dry air and weakened quickly. The major problems were the coast, the area north and west of landfall and the area around SW PA where it semi stalled.

Our weather sucks here but the weather in PA seems even worse. I don't know how you guys deal with it. It is like England but harsher.
