This is completely the case. I haven't seen a single SVX in a very long time that would be a 1 or a 2. I drive my SVX several times a week during the summer, and though I have a very nice paint job, it's far from perfect. The ratings are not based on comparisons with a typical SVX, but are steadfast rules. Making a major modification (like a transmission swap as Ben pointed out) can really hurt the collector value of a car. I've built my SVX to make it exactly what I want for my own personal enjoyment. When I go to sell it down the road, it will be OK if its value doesn't live up to its full potential as I have gotten a tremendous return from the car in simple enjoyment.

I used to be extremely careful about not putting miles on my car because I wanted to preserve its low mileage in order to keep the value high. As the mileage of the car got closer and closer to 50k, I started driving the car less and less, until last year I only put about 500 miles on the car all year in an effort to keep the mileage under 50k. I finally snapped out of it and have now been using the car which is actually better for it mechanically. (Just rolled over 58k today!)

Regarding value, and the price for which our SVXs actually sell: There are many factors that come into play. In many cases knowing how to market and sell a car is the number one factor. Being in a position where you're able to wait for the right buyer to come along is also very helpful. In the car business we have a saying that "There's a butt for every seat." and that holds very true. We can have a very overpriced car on the lot for over a year with no interest, and one day someone will come along and pay full price for it. All it takes is that one buyer who sees something they have to have.

Dunno', Mike - Re-reading the criteria for a two, albeit simplistic, I don't see anything that disqualifies a (very) few of our pets, given a professional detailing.

True with everything from an SVX to silverware.
But with a "published" guideline, at you've got some numbers from which to begin the negotiations.

About a month ago, Russel Subaru had a new silver BRZ on their showroom floor. It was not for sale, but acted as a "halo" car to generate interest in the vehicle, and the rest of the line.

A woman came in and fell in love with THAT car and wanted to take it home THAT day. When the salesman told her it wasn't for sale, she asked to speak with the sales manager. When he arrived, he reaffirmed that the car was not for sale, to which the woman replied:

"Not even for $6,000 OVER sticker?"

She got the car. People like that are still out there or Barrett-Jackson would not be where he is today.
