Re: Door speakers

I was little surprised when I took off the door panel to uncover a pair Jensen XS 1652 speakers. A little wet and a little rusted where they made the custom mount points on the door. They cut and bent the edges of the circle in a few places to make a flat mount point and put in clips. Looks like it will be fine to reuse it. I am cleaning it up a bit and putting some paint over those areas.

I am replacing these Jensens with Infinity Reference, but I am confused as to why it all sounded like it was blown? Maybe the other side is worse? I guess I will see how it sounds when it is done. Maybe the dash tweeters went bad.

Re: Door speakers

Your lucky... This is what I found...

Jensen is really low end, they may just sound crappy.
You said water and rust, maybe the voice coil leads from the post to the cone are rusted out? That would cause crappy sound.

Re: Door speakers

The new Infinitys sound a lot better, the buzzy sound is gone now too so I am happy. In fact they sound so much better that I may just do the backs now.

When I took my drivers side panel off I learned that my drivers side door had been replaced at one point. It was painted black on the inside, while the inside of the passenger side one was the body color. No record of accidents on car fax. Guess it really doesn't matter, just interesting.

There were also signs of rust starting to form on the drivers door in that usual place. The passenger side one was fine.

BTW anyone want a free pair Jensens before I toss them?

Re: Door speakers

Has anyone tried these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/6-Speaker-Ad...653bb7&vxp=mtr

The description is a little confusing as to whether they will hold 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 speakers.

Re: Door speakers

Hi Tony,
The problem with those adapters is they dont have the offset the factory mounts do, so a deep speaker will crash the window. The factory speaker also has a cardboard ring glued to front, to interface with the cutout. It is easy to remove and rtv the ring on to new speaker. I used rtv to secure the replacement speaker to the adapter after drilling out the tack welds.

I've used them and they work perfectly. As Gordon said, if you have a REALLY deep speaker, it can interfere with the window, but there aren't many speakers where this would be an issue.

Also, to anyone replacing front speakers on the SVX, I STRONGLY suggest getting speaker baffles. The door design allows no protection for the speaker from moisture. This only aids in the foam surrounds rotting away. Not an issue with most aftermarket speakers that use rubber or another material as opposed to foam, but it still protects the speaker. Crutchfield carries them though I think I found them somewhere else.

Re: Door speakers

Gordon,

I want to make I am hearing you right. Are you saying that you removed the old speaker from the old mounts by drilling out tack welds and then mounted new speakers to the old mounts using RTV?

All,

How long does it take to disassemble the rear of the car to get new 6x9s into the rear deck? If the weather is reasonable this weekend I may give it a shot...after I mow the jungle that is my yard.

Yes,
The flange is thin, it would be difficult to use screws to mount a replacement speaker. The RTV holds very well. The flange gets a bit distorted removing the tack welds, the RTV will fill the slight gaps and irregularities.
