Talking Its Finally Time, and looking for tips

So the Time has finally come!

I have gotten the funds I need to get my 96' back on the road, after sitting for way too long.

Since it has been sitting so long, I figured a full reseal would be worth it, and a few other things, the parts list I have is as follows:

Head Gasket
Head Bolts
Valve Cover Gasket
Intake Gasket
Exhaust Gasket
Cam Seals
Crank Seal
Front + Rear Main Seal
Oil Pan Gasket
Water Pump
Oil Pump Gasket
Transmission Cooler
Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Tube Gasket (I think that is what its called?)
Coolant
Oil
Transmission Fluid
Transmission Filter + Gasket
Belts + Hoses

Now, as you can see I am doing a few other things just while I can, so what I really need advice on is, Since the car has been sitting for over two years, is there anything else I need to look into getting for the engine
(already know I will prob. have to replace my tires)
Am I missing anything I really need to replace while I will be at it?

Also, is there any tricks on getting the engine out and onto a stand?
Anything that I should watch out for?

It will be myself, my good friend chris and 2 others (Older Subaru Owners, GL, XT, Legacy, etc) helping me with this, and I plan on taking pictures of the entire thing.

So any tips, tricks, or advice will be useful.

TIA!

Re: Its Finally Time, and looking for tips

Are you buying the gaskets individually or getting the kit? Also the oil pan is just rtv'd on. Are you doing the t belt?

Edit: I'm also taking the motor out of my pearl and it wasn't as hard as it looks, just messy. I got the engine disconnected from the car in 3 hrs with screw off time. I'm just waiting to get an engine hoist to pull it out now.

Re: Its Finally Time, and looking for tips

My car sat for four or five years. Originally it was because it needed a new water pump, then because I got severely hooked on autocrossing, had a son, had to crunch at work, etc...

From my experience, I'd recommend getting a timing belt and all new timing idler pulleys. I bought a nice kit on ebay. I think it was probably this kit:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/92-97-Subaru-SVX-EG33D-3-3L-DOHC-24V-H6-Timing-Belt-Kit-/300682833245?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &fits=Make%3ASubaru|Model%3ASVX&hash=item460217ed5 d&vxp=mtr

I also replaced the actuator while I was at it, but the one I took out of the car was really fine. I bought mine from Advance.

I had to replace my drive belt idlers. Honestly, I could have just replaced the bearings in each, but I replaced the pulleys, too. Shiny.

Your brakes, like mine, may never be right again. The rotors may need to be replaced or turned.

+1 on all the timing idlers and I would change engine mounts if they are leaking or toasted. When I pulled my engine one of the mounts was rusted to frame. If u get resistance when hoisting engine check mounts ;-)

Re: Its Finally Time, and looking for tips

As long as you have gotten that far into the engine, replacing the actual oil pump might be a good idea. mine in my 96 was noy pumping adequately at around 110,000 miles. Replaced as part of a complete rebuild.

I was looking at Brakes as well, thinking with slotted rotors, mite as well,
and I will add everything to my parts list

Engine Mounts, yea... that's an awesome idea. I do want this to last another 100k miles, get em while I can.

Got it, added to the parts list.

Well... my parts list has grown, but I think I will still be ok,
I will be taking a trip to Titusville, PA in a week, be there for 2 weeks,
then will be back here and can start getting all the parts together for this.

It has been too long being without my car, it will be glad to get her going again....

Now, if I can find someone that will give me a good price on paint

Re: Its Finally Time, and looking for tips

hi, I would recommend the sti solid mounts instead of stock oil filled since your replacing anyway.

I'm not sure if you remember me you followed me to my house one day and we talked about the svx's for a while, mine is pearl/black.

I remember where you live if you need an extra pair of hands I sure can help.

Let me know when.

Hey!
I am not sure if I will be replacing my engine mounts just yet, they are on my list if needed.
Also, I will start on the engine reseal after I get back from my two week trip to PA, which I should be getting back around the 28th or sooner, then I will be having my car towed to a friend of mine's place, off of Atlantic, near 9A, where not only does he have the room, but also shade, and is also a Subaru owner (GL Sedan, XT, Baja)

But if you want to come give us some extra hands, i'd be all for it!

Awesome, Got your PM and Replied, But I did forget to ask something.

Those STi Solid mounts, do they fit without mods to our car, or do they need to be modified?

I do like the idea of better engine mounts if I do need to replace them

Definitely worth doing.

Also, for radiator hoses, I humbly recommend the silicone ones from motorsport warehouse (Dayle).

I unfortunately do not know exactly how to modify the mounts. Though from what has been said I would expect it wouldnt be too bad to learn.
