engine oil

Hi, an other thread about that
I want to change my penzoil 5w30 for synthetic
I use my car in winter and during the summer I use it at track(lapping, rallyx,...)

I want to know if the amsoil full synthetic is a good choice and If its better to run 5w30,5w40,etc

thanks!

Re: engine oil

Amsoil is good but if I were running the car on a track I would go with Redline or Motul. What matters more than weight is the HTHS rating and especially on the track. You only need 5W or 0W in the winter. I don't drive lots of miles or in harsh conditions so my oil sees summer and winter conditions between changes. So I use a blend of 5W30 and 0W40 Mobil1. You might want to use different oils on the track and in the winter.

Re: engine oil

for the summer(doesn't know how often I gonna be on track) It gonna be the amsoil or motul but in 10w30?

I'm not saying you can't use that mix in the summer. I'm just saying it isn't necessary. If one tracks their car or drives hard, they might be better off with an oil with higher HTHS ratings. If you drive normally, the 5W/0W mix is fine.

You need to determine what is the source of the knock before you can determine what to do. What exactly is knocking?

Re: engine oil

i just bought some mobile 1 0w-40 european car formula they have a 12 dollar mail in rebate now, if you buy 6 or more quarts.
my way of thinking, is that the oil is thinner on start ups.
start ups are hard on engines and thicker as the engine heats up more protection.
so the 0w40 will be better all around oil. i dont plan on mixing it with any other oil.

the only issue is if it is too thin to protect or engines when it is cold or if it is too thick when the engine is hot to go thew the oil passages. i dont think it should be an issue though.
let me know if i am mistaken.
they recommend it for porsche they make boxer engines like subaru

Re: engine oil

Mobil 1 0W-40 is what I use all year around. The 0W is thin enough to flow through the tight oil passages at startup in cold weather.

This is a good choice and shouldn't cause any problems at all

Re: engine oil

To further overcomplicate this thread, the Shell Rotella T6 5w40 oil is what I'm using, and is pretty well liked among the STi crowd. Not cheap though, but walmart stocks it.
