Activities for Reading 13

Time is getting short (102 days). Anyone with ideas for activities for this year's Reading meet, post them here.
I haven't heard too much in the way of raffle items so far. Presently, all we have is a new 160A high-output alternator (generously re-donated back to the network by fun173, after winning it last year. He sold his SVX before he could install it.) This item may be a silent auction item

Any other ideas, post them here.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

On April 28th The Maple Grove Raceway is having a
"Grudge Racing/Test and Tune".
I plan on drag racing at least one SVX!

I have another idea for a parking lot "function/event?"
More on that tomorrow.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

Whats the chance that there is a "drive in" in the area?
The Princess Bride and Office Space come to mind...
We COULD project a movie onto one of those huge white tractor trailors andd set up our own drive in!

Re: Activities for Reading 13

How about a roundtable discussion on common topics? We will have some of the most respected folks there and we could lay out what we know are facts, theories and disproven myths. The main topic that comes to mind is the transmission. What is/was wrong and what can/should/shouldn't be done about it. The same discussion can occur with tranny alternatives like the various older 4EATs and the various 5MTs and 6MTs.

A similar discussion can be had with regards to the headgaskets or any other issues people want to see a consensus about.

Another idea would be a roast. We could roast Tom or Nate or someone else.......

I would personally like to make sure the entertainment from last year is at the hotel again. That was.....entertaining.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

Posted this somewhere else, but here's my idea: I think, if we get enough people, we should arrange all of our cars in the shape of a big "20" and take a snapshot of it from the top of the hotel.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

I'm not even sure I can go, but If do, I could only come for Saturday.
So, spending the day drinking in the hotel parking lot would not be on my list of things to do, seeing I will have to drive home that night.
(This is pretty much what reading has been right? Or did I get the wrong impressions from the threads I have read?)

Watching svxfiles drag race SVX on the other hand, sounds much more entertaining.
What are the requirements to run a stock SVX on that track?

Making a 20 with SVXi. Sure, it would make a nice cover for the calendar.
Unfortunately, my SVX sunroof has a big sun bleached spot so shooting it from above is not recommended. :/

To make a movie theater on a trailer we would need:
A trailer (are these just hanging around in the parking lot at reading??)
Projector, 3000 lumens, HD supported (SOMETHING LIKE THIS): $500
Good FM transmitter (SOMETHING LIKE THIS): $100
900w 12v DC-AC Power Inverter: I have one
Laptop with 720p output: I have one
8' 3-Outlet Extension Cord: I have one
VGA cable: I have one
6' ft Mini jack Stereo Audio Cable:I have one

This setup would project an image about 16' wide x 9' tall.
Like one this big: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nT-bN1OZ5xs
And the FM transmitter will make it so you use your cars stereo for audio, just like the drive in.
If no one has a transmitter, then I guess we could hook up some speakers to the laptop and sit in lawn chairs.

My thoughts would be something like this for Saturday:
Breakfast
Group drive to
scenic photo shoot
Group drive to
driving range / bowling / something to pass time
Group drive to
nice lunch
Group drive to
Drag strip
The please adjust my TPS hour / advice hour
Watch svxfiles drag
Group drive to
Hotel parking lot
20 shot photo shoot
parking lot chill time
Designated drivers go and get the pizza/wings/fried chicken/whatnot
watching some projected movies on the trailer
yawn, it was fun, nice meeting you guys, now time for me to hit the road.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

If you want to watch drag racing at Maple Grove Raceway it costs $10.00 per person.
If you drive your car there, to drag race it costs $20.00 for you and your car.
Anyone with you has to pay an additional $10.00 for entry.
If you trailer your car into the racetrack the fee is $25.00.
To drag race a stock street car it needs only to street worthy.
Safe tires, not leaking fluids, etc.
If you go faster than 14.00 seconds less in the quater mile then you will need a helmet.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

OK, the thing that I was thinking/planning;
I have contacted two experienced automotive paint "buffers".
My thinking is that we set up a gasoline genorator,
(I have one)
and have an experienced person,
(possibly Jerry Wilson or Ashley Weaver)
bring their buffer, compound, wax, polish, soft towels, whatever,
and buff the paint on some of our SVXi for a fee.
It's Reading and everyone wants to look good, so, to me this makes sence.
To have permission from The Holiday Inn, it has to be a
demonstration/how too, with donations acceptepted.
Some of the proceeds would go to our Network,.
I am guessing that IF you have a relatively clean car, a whole buffing job would run $100.00 with $20.00 going to The Network.
And if you only wanted to have your headlights and grille buffed, $20.00, or so, with $5.00 going to The Network.
This is not set in stone, but what I think is a reasonable plan.

Also I have contacted a "Dent Free" guy that I have known and trusted since 1987.
He, (Dave Marino) MIGHT be able to come out on Saturday and fix those dings you have always been going to fix.
If Dave can not make it, He will get me a lead for a local "Paintless Dent Repair" guy for that Saturday, or sometthing.
BTW, John Hoffman got the approval fron The Holiday Inn for this, YAY!
So if in any way you are unhappy, please call him at home, 301-555-1212.

Re: Activities for Reading 13

This falls under the same guidelines as the raffles in the past. Items were donated by members and tickets were given out in exchange for a donation. This removed the for-profit aspect and the hotel guidelines were not violated and it was simply a fund raiser for the network.

In this case, the individual paint buffers are "donating" their experience in a How-to tech session on automotive polishing and waxing. Members who want their cars detailed can donate to these individuals, with a portion going to the network, while the remainder simply compensates them for materials used, travel expenses, etc. If there us a lot of interest, this may stretch out over a couple of days, so accommodation costs have to be figured in as well.

I would think a fee of $100 should cover about 2 hours worth of compounding, polishing, buffing, etc., which, in the hands of a professional, is more than enough time for the average car.

Those who do not want to do this can still pick up valuable pointers and techniques by watching and asking questions.

We would need some sort of commitment in advance of how many might be interested (in either a full buffing or just a simple simple headlight restoration.) to see if this is worthwhile. Even 8-10 people could fill up 2 full days. Of course, weather is a primary consideration. The PDR is a great idea as well.

Thanks to svxfiles for coming up with this innovative and entertaining activity.

If anyone else wants to volunteer for run a tech session or how-to demonstration, feel free to jump in. They have all been done before but a whole new set of noobs can learn from a repeat.

I'm leaving this entire project in OT's capable hands. He knows everyone involved better than I do. Questions and anything else should be directed directly to him in this thread or personally.

I am sure there will be a cut-off limit for each day ( and allow some overbooking because of last minute no shows.) So commit early and secure your spot in case this becomes a reality. Once we find out how many days the paint restore guys will be there, the better we can plan.

I probably won't be at Reading this year, so last minute issues will have to be worked out as they come up.
