Re: Come on IRENE!

I like storms, I hope it hits us. My girlfriend also loves storms.
It is not uncommon for us to be outside in the driveway in the middle of bad thunderstorms.

My girlfriend already left to go to waters-edge for the weekend, she wanted to watch the hurricane from the beach.
I don't think its going to be that bad...I haven't decided if I am going to join her or not at the beach.

I don't think it can be any worse than that tornado in 2009 that hit us, that was kinda scary being outside..
The trees were just snapping, we had to run inside because of the hail.

No power for 3 days after that mess.

The power company in CT (is it stil CL&P?) is predicting power outtages for 7-10 days!

Re: Come on IRENE!

yep still cl&p, but I'm not buying into the hype.

This all seems very overblown for what is going to be a cat 1 or tropical depression by the time it gets here.

Only prep I am doing is charging up my cell phone. That will give me a camera, mp3 player, 100 games, FM radio, flashlight, and clock.
And if the cell tower isn't down, then internet and phone too!

Same here, I lived on Eglin and Tyndall in the 90s.

We don't get storms in Alaska.

Re: Come on IRENE!

Been through Gloria years ago ( I even went out with a video camera and drove around and tapped it for the local TV station ). This will be nothing . In about 10 hours you will hear them say it stalled over NJ and is heading out to sea. We are sold out of Gas cans, water,D cell batteries,we could sell 50 more generators if we could get them, We sold 33. and I stood in line for 1/2 an hour to buy 3/4 lb of boiled ham and a 1/2 lb of cheese.
I am in the valley here in CT . Most of it just blows over us .

What valley? The only valley I know of is the one I grew up in which is the Naugatuck Valley. Are you down near Ansonia or up near Naugy?

http://www.intellicast.com This site tracks everything! They have a interactive map that lets you track wildfires to earthquakes. The one in Richmond was on the map in 5 minutes.. It will show every quake for 3 days, world-wide.
No downloads, just click and look.

Re: Come on IRENE!

For most inland areas of CT. this was an overhyped hurricane. Max winds in my area were around 40 MPH, same as you would see in a summer thunder storm or winter blizzard. Not one single limb down in my neighborhood. Different story though the closer to the shore. I encounted several downed trees and flooded roads on my way into work today at 2pm. There were two long trees that had fallen across the northbound side of the Merrit Pkwy right before the tunnel at exit 59, and there were two state troopers with chain saws cutting it up, which I wasnt expecting. I guess the crews are busy with other clean ups. Good Riddance Irene!

Re: Come on IRENE!

I agree it was no Gloria, or Larry . Big hype . What are we gona do with all the generators that will be coming back from the people that bought them .I got branches in the pool and the sump pump[ just stopped pumping. Lights blinked 2, tree times. Our parking lot was full ( 20 or 30 ) electrical power boom trucks . I don't think 5 people lost power in my town. Looks like a beautiful week coming up now

I also have this huge walnut tree and a huge maple tree that worries me too
No worries at home Matt, 95% of the downed trees and branches here were from the freaking idiots who don't maintain healthy trees. Had a crew out since midnight clearing the roads and I'm sure getting yelled at for not hauling away what is the responsibility of the lazy property owner... and people wonder why their taxes are high. Got about 3 inches of rain and peak gusts in the 60-70mph range.

NW CT fared the best in terms of power outtages. The state has/had more than 600,000 people without power. Just about the entire eastern half of the state was completely blacked out. My sister is in Ellington and is stil without power and may be for quite some time. More than 80% of their town is without power and it gets worse the farther south and east you go. I may go down there tomorrow to loan them my generator if they can't find a return, as you suggest there will be.
