HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

So my AC is acting up lately and sometimes not coming on at all. If I restart the car it may sometimes work but not always. Then if I shut it off, open the car hood and then slam it shut, it usually will come on when turning the AC on again.

Finally had some time to find how to pull the codes and they are:

13/31

i pressed auto after that and then it goes to 41 and sits there. I guess it's prompting me to do something at this point but I don't know what.

Anyways, what exactly is the PBR circuit? Is that part of my HVAC electronic controls section or possibly something else? I guess I'm only posting to see if someone has had this exact same code before and knew exactly what it is that is causing this fault.

Otherwise, I guess I will eventually take it to my local shop and give them the malfunction codes/guide to pinpoint the issue... I have no multimeter.

Do you see the rods move (near the gas pedal) when you change settings?

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

This is not to say it doesn't work at all. It was working last night on the way home, I shut it off and ran the test and this is what it came back with. I heard it cycling through the tests but I didn't look to see if anything was moving down there... I can take a look later though. I'm guessing so since it was working.... but intermittently so.

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

I also have code 13 and 41. My fan stopped working on Monday.

P.S. Doah! 13 is sun sensor and I was parked in the shade. Might be just a fuse.

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

Could this be related to the AC relay under the hood?

It is consistent now. I have to either open and close the hood of the car before the AC will come on (fan) or run over a bump and it'll come on. Otherwise, at night time... when it is cooler, it will come on without having to drive over something or slam the hood.

What other wires/connections should I look for?

Does anyone think it may not be a short/loose wire and could actually be the blower fans on their way out?

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

Take the bottom cover off the blower motor (2 phillips screws) and clean all the junk that comes out. I used to have to give mine a kick to get the fan to come on.

Look up from the passenger side footwell. It's round. I would take a picture for you if I was close to an SVX right now.

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

Right on, I appreciate it. Turned it on full blast today and it seemed like it was on low... when turning a hard right it would blast full on - high... but as I straightened out again it would go back to low... it was only 100 in the car today so I hope it's just a loose shoddy connection!

Thanks for the advice/tips!

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

So I pulled the plug on the acuator and reconnected it (part of the pbr system as I understand) and now the fan doesn't come on at all. Not even when hitting a bump or slamming down the hood.

What a pita to get under there... I'm sort of at a loss... I'm only guessing it is due to something wrong with the wiring but how the hood slamming down has anything to do with anything near the passenger front end acuator is beyond me.

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

It's also possible the brushes for the fan are worn out. I've had an electrical shop cut some brushes to fit. Best would be to borrow a fan to test.

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

I'm really hoping not... and I have no way to test it out with another so it's full on one way or another. So I realize it's not going to be the AC compressor relay (duh) I wasn't thinking at the time, and it's fully working... but I was watching the videos on youtube about our AC system and it shows that there is a relay somewhere for blower motor itself? Is this near the motor somewhere under the passenger foot area as it appears to indicate in the video?

The 13 error went away on the test, during the day as it should so it has nothing to do with the sunload sensor so now 31 is just showing up. I'm afraid to take it to someone local and dare I ever to take it to an actual Subaru dealer $ but either way it's got to get done...

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

$55 for the relay at autozone and the blower motor appears to be $79, prices sound right? I think I remember seeing the one on subaruparts at like $270 or something ridiculous... unless I was looking at the wrong thing.

Re: HVAC 13/31 - 41 Trouble Codes

Ok, it was cool this morning so I got to digging around again. Found the relays (another duh moment) and got the AC to work again by smashing a hammer into the blower motor... dut dut dut dut dut.... sounds like the fan is clipping/clicking or something and it's still low but does come on.

I'm going to pick up a new blower motor and dive in.
Thanks again! I'll report back if it works or not.
