death of my svx?

My beloved SVX which I purchased new in 94, has expired, or so I think.

I started to notice some slippage in my higher gears. Then 4th was really taking a long time to engage and then 3rd started down the same road. I was commuting on a daily basis and couldn't give her a rest.

The end result, I lost 4th gear. I have since purchase a new used 04 Gran Marquis as my commuter. I wanted something that I could survive a head on crash in. I just lost my brother to an accident earlier this year where he lost the battle with a Mercedes.

My 94 SVX is a front wheel drive unit with 122,000 miles. My question is, what would the cost be to get the tranny rebuilt? Could I find a replacement tranny? Since it is a front wheel drive and most units were all wheel drive, will this make it harder to replace the tranny?

I don't want to lose my membership to the SVX club but I have to be financially realistic as to my continued ownership of my SVX or do I part her out, I don't know at this point.

bummed,

ken

Re: death of my svx?

The fact that it's front wheel drive is going to make it very easy to replace the transmission. You can use a used transmission out of nearly any fwd subaru.

Now that is the first encouraging thought I heard. I was thinking this would be a good project for me to attempt, pull the motor and replace the tranny.

Thanks for that. What do you think a used tranny would go for?

regards

from my understanding with a little extra work and some parts from a wrecked AWD svx you could do a awd conversion too.

I was wondering about that. It would seem to put a whole bunch more of complications to the job. Alot of variables and additional parts to put in.

Re: death of my svx?

basically you need (if auto)
rear diff, rear subframe (that the diff mounts to), AWD TCU, Drive shaft and rear axles. As far as the rest it bolts up.

Any Legacy/ Impreza FWD transmission from 1990 to 1997 will bolt in with next to nothing to change.
You can usually get a used transmission for about $450.00.
You do not have to pull the engine.
In my signature is a how to for a trans swap.
