I think my alternator is gone

i've been having to boost my car lately and when i do i can keep it running but tonight as i got home my car just died after a few minutes of being in park. When i accelerate i'm can hear the alternator whine in the speakers at low speed and rpms. Is it the alternator thats gone?

Sounds more like a battery to me. Do you have a multimeter to measure the voltage at the battery posts while its running? Alternator whine is common if you have bad grounds or feedback loops, it shouldnt do it normally on an SVX though unless it was working very hard, which if the battery is bad it would be working overtime to supply the amperage needed by the car.

Charge the battery FIRST, then start it and check the running voltage. IF the battery is dead, its very bad for alternators to sustain the electrical systems by themselves, or to charge a fully discharged battery.

Get the green and red little battery post gaskets that sit under the terminals. They will help prevent this.
