changing rear diff fluid

i was ready to change my diff fluid, but......what kind of wacky square socket do you use to get the add & drain plugs off?!?!?!
(i know to try the add plug first ) i looked around Pepboys and Advance Auto, but couldn't find anything that might work. anybody have a socket name/size and where to buy? thanks for any help!

Significant Technical Input
Just stick a 1/2" drive ratchet, etc. in the plug and go to town!

i tried that with my "Gorilla" wrench (extendable lug nut buster with 1/2" drive), but its smaller than the plug hole. doesn't get any bite.

well, i got the front diff fluid changed no problem, but i gave up on the rear. it appears that the 1/2" ratchet will fit in the drain plug more snug than in the add plug. i think the PO, or PO's mechanic may have stripped the add plug a little. arrrrgh! anybody have any ideas how to get that sucker out? thanks,

Alan

Get a real big allen wrench and a bench grinder and go to work. Or use some square bar stock, etc.

front diffy?

Is the front diffy not part of the ATF case? Or is there a separate container for the front diffy?

Re: front diffy?

Yep, It's a seperate unit. The dipstick is on the other (right) side from the tranny stick, near the firewall. It needs 1.3 qts of API class GL-5 gear oil. B.

I just changed the rear diff oil (finally!) about three days ago in the rear. Last time I tried I couldn't get the bolts out. This time I had more determination. Just use the 1/2 in rachet, MAKING SURE YOU DO THE TOP SCREW BEFORE THE BOTTOM to make sure you can get both of them off. Otherwise, that would be a Garrett mistake. Also, the bottom has that magnet thing inside it so just kinda wipe it off real good.

Ha! If only you had an SVX like mine where I have probably performed most of the first-time maintenance on such things as the tranny and diff fluids..."hmm, that bolt's got the sharpest looking corners I've ever seen..."

Mmm... 0.50 in. = 12.7mm, just a little slop for a 13mm square.
