Can anyone near Northampton MA Look at a Car for me?

I've put down a deposit on a replacement for my '93 at Steve Lewis Subaru, but am having some concerns after seeing a photo showing some ugly RUST on the hub through the wheel spokes. I know you East Coast folks put up with torching bolts off, etc etc, but I'd sure feel better if an experienced SVX'er took her for a drive and addressed any concerns I might have about the mechanicals/trans and any BAD rust. I will have my old car to cannibalize for a lot of things, but...... I'd gladly cover gas $$$ for you to take a little ride. Anyone??? Ad is on AutoTrader Zip 01060

Re: Can anyone near Northampton MA Look at a Car for me?

Hello Glenn-

My office is about 15 minutes from S.L. Subaru. They occasionally service my cars and I buy my dealer parts there.

I looked at the 93 when it first appeared on their lot. I was told it was traded in on a new Impreza by the original owner (who I believe lives nearby in Hatfield). The car looks decent at first impression but I did not look at it closely since I was told $16,000 was the asking price and I prefer dual airbag cars.

A few weeks later the SVX was still there and I reinquired. It was going to the dealer auction and the sales manager said it would not be sold for less than $9,500, if I wished to offer that amount. The SVX reappeared on the lot.

I know a fair bit about SVXi and have owned several, two of which I drove alot. I just have my 96 now and love it. I would be happy to inspect the car for you and will try to obtain contact info on the original owner so you can speak with them as well.

I grew up in Berkeley and was shocked when I saw my first New England rust bucket. This SVX seemed nice superficially and deserves a closer look if you want an Anniversary model.

Call me on my cell at 413.221.9669,
Christian

Re: Can anyone near Northampton MA Look at a Car for me?

Hmmmm, that doesn't look good. Especially this:

Quote:
We were driving by the dealership selling this car and stopped to look at it. The body is eh at best. It looked like a bag walnuts with the popping rust spots starting. Paint rubbed off off corners of the bumpers, dent in the hood.Stock wheels all corroded The battery was dead wouldn't stay running after start up. Once you took the jumpers off of it, it would stall right out. Ran rough. The sales man told us countless times how it was "religiously" garaged....maybe, but i think my response was "what did his kids play hockey in the garage with it?"
Christian has agreed to give it a good going over and test drive, but must admit this isn't what I was hoping to hear. Should have known.....I guess.

Re: Can anyone near Northampton MA Look at a Car for me?

Good Morning Glenn-

The quick photos of the SVX in Northampton are posted at http://s526.photobucket.com/albums/cc342/kcbsvx/ . The car was locked with no one at the dealership.

There seems to be only the one rust spot on the RF wheel arch with my car key for scale. It is probably a chip through the primer that was not touched up and sealed. New England SVXi have a habit of forminig two rust spots on each door at the seam/groove where the plastic panel meets the metal. It may be points where holes were drilled for the mounting clips. This car did not show those spots. I will look again Monday in better lighting.

Scuffs down to the plastic on the rear bumper corners, twin 3"x1/2" dings at RR corner below lite (paint not cracked), strange diagonal linear dents on hood, 1/2 dozen small misc door dings along RT side and a few on LT. The usual wear on drivers left seat bolster and some on the seat bottom. Both front armrests need further cleaning. Glass is nice except the very minor guide pad marks as I described that refused to be photoed in yesterday's light.

Now I have reiterated the downside but rest is minor and all as I described to you on the phone yesterday as I walked around the car. The car presents a decent image overall.

The bordeaux with the dirty lower extremeties from the recent storms is mine. I am sad to hear of the terminal damage to your pampered baby, but joyed that you could walk away (at least until the EMTs straped you down).

I will call you Monday afternoon when I can get away to Northampton for a test drive and the lift inspection.

Call me with any questions,
Christian

Re: Can anyone near Northampton MA Look at a Car for me?

Hi Glenn-

As you know, I looked at the car on the lift today and test drove it. It is nice for a New England car but is not a clean CaliCar in the motor bay nor the underbelly. I saw the photos of you dear departed baby and, as decent as this car is, I don’t think it will be up to your high standards.

She drove well. Quiet, straight, smooth. Trans shifted just like a nice stock SVX; not too quick, not too slow and no apparent slippage. Hiway kickdowns were gentile and controlled- no undue slippage and no jerking. I am now used to the 4.44 with resister mod and this recalled the calmer days of the stock setup. Smoothly gathered up to triple digit speed before I remembered I didn’t closely inspect the tires before venturing out. No vibration during normal braking, tracked straight without steering input, didn’t notice any rattles. Struts seemed softer than mine, but well controlled. Bumpy side roads brought no surprises. Only had two on ramps for corner testing and the salesman was onboard so, at 6 tenths, she cornered calmly with smooth transitions.

A nice start for your own “Earl’s Mini Museum” comes with this AE SVX: Original window sticker (“Aniv Edition”/ $34.000 + $475 Transportation/ 18 + 26 mpg/ $1012 estimated annual fuel cost!); Subaru first aid kit; 93 owner’s manual and dealer service booklet with SVX cover; Road &Track SVX special magazine; and the CUP HOLDER. See photos.

A couple of the usual SVX personality items were present- condensation in tail lights, and sunroof needs the starter nudge. The intake manifold, alt, abs block, cam covers, etc showed the NE oxidation spotting. Brake fluid was dark but not cloudy, coolant looked 50% clean, the trans dipstick was frozen in place and I pulled and tried to rotate it until I was afraid of snapping it off. A thick mudpie was on the painted shelf below the battery. Some leaking around trans pan and maybe on the rear diff - no other obvious loose fluids.

Rusty items on suspension, brakes, etc. Not as bad as most around here. Rustwise I was most bothered by the little fittings like brake line clamps and couplings.

I have listed the flaws but the balance of the car presents well, as it does overall. I am just being picky since I am evaluating for someone else.

Today’s photos are called kcbsvx2 on Photobucket here: http://s526.photobucket.com/albums/c...cbsvx/kcbsvx2/

This is a nice low mileage (67,xxx) New England SVX and should go to someone who appreciates it.

Good luck with your next SVX, Glenn,
Christian

Re: Can anyone near Northampton MA Look at a Car for me?

You're a true SVX friend Christian! I've passed your comments and pics on to Piotr (Peter) in Va, as he's very interested in it. My search continues. I drove this one yesterday, and though it was a sweet driver I felt it was overpriced for needing a repaint(ad pics nicely Photo Shopped IMHO) and anyone trying to sell a car with both sun-visors permanently flopped down in your face reflects a lack of care overall. My story anyway. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/car/780255890.html

A few comments following the delivery of my dear little red car to my driveway this afternoon. This is the first time I've seen it since leaving her for the tow truck. These cars are literally little tanks! My drivers door was not only jammed, it was pushed out and back about 3" as the roof buckled on both sides. The intake boot on the TB is crushed against the firewall and the battery literally exploded! The AC compressor was actually stuffed under the intake, shearing off it's mounts and hard lines. My seat mount is bent, with the seat back against the armrest, and seat cushion tilted toward the door. My Garmin and it's beanbag mount must each be responsible for separate impact shatters to the windshield. I am one BLESSED SOB to have been in an SVX that day. 'nuff said!

Glenn
