Concerning gas prices, I just sold my MR2, which got decent mileage, for an RX-8, which doesn't. Luckily, I have a 1mi commute. Gas prices aren't irrelevant, but I sure don't have to worry much.

I did take the RX-8 on a road trip to WI a couple weeks ago. Painful. I got right around 30mpg on the freeway in the SVX, so you guys have no excuse for complaining. That RX-8 gets 22-25mpg.
1mile commute??!/1/1/1?!?!?! Walk!!!

It shouldn't use much fuel at all to restart at a stoplight. Sure, when you start the car cold it dumps a lot of fuel in, but when starting warm it *should* be injecting the same amount of fuel as a normal idling stroke of the engine. Shutting it off for 10 seconds is likely not beneficial, but a minute or two should be. Granted, I'm going off of typical operation and the SVX may prove to be different. It's already proven me wrong a time or two.

Personally, I drive the car and put in 91 octane when the needle gets low. If I'm worried about economy, I'll drive the Miata (until the engine is pulled). If an extra $5 of gas every week or two is something a person gets worked up over, then a luxury sports car likely isn't a good choice in cars for him/her. Just my $0.02 though.

I guess it takes an engineer to come up with such a perfect idea

If you are able (like on interstate or something) it helps if you accelerate downhill, and then coast more uphill.

Slowly accelerating downhill won't use any more fuel than driving a constant speed on a flat spot, and then the coasting uphill will certainly save you a lot.

On long trips I hardly ever use my cruise unless it is mostly flat roads. Uphill/downhill you can always beat cruise for mileage IF you do it right.

On a 2000 mile round trip last summer I actually got my best mileage driving in the mountains. Everywhere else I could only get about 27 MAYBE 28, but with the cruise off averaging speeds of 80-85 mph, I got a solid 30 mpg. in the mountains.

Cruise does not help you get better mileage, it is just for when you feel like being lazy.

I only use it when cops are on my bumper... I don't even have cruise in the SVX, it weighed too much

I bet it went back up after you shut the car off.

This I know is incorrect. Not long ago I was diagnosing a stalling condition (which I'm still wrestling with). I had rigged up a noid light so I could see it while driving so that when it stalled, I could see if the injectors were still getting a signal when it was dying. Any time on my '94 that my foot was entirely off the gas, the injectors got basically no signal as opposed to a very steady signal even at 5% throttle.

Not using cruise control on the highway will save fuel only if you hold a rock-steady throttle and let the car speed and slow depending upon terrain... an irritating way to drive unless you're on a wide-open road. Allowing the cruise to maintain a consistent speed over long distances makes more sense, as it's way more disciplined than anybody's right foot.

Feel free to try yourself. I used to always use cruise, but using this method always gets me better mileage. Maybe my way of explaining it isn't spot-on but it works, that's for sure.

Also, I'm not saying that it doesn't fire the inectors at all, just that keeping a constant speed on level ground still fires the injectors about the same as slightly accelerating down a hill.

I don't disagree with what you say at all. I think we may be thinking slightly different things.
