I'll have to +1 on what everyone before said.
In the Air Force, working on the heavies translates DIRECTLY into the civilian world. If you plan on going to school, if it's remotely related to your MOS the military will help you. If you didn't do so well on the ASVAB, by all means, retake it. This will help you get a better MOS. Try to find a job that will translate into the civilian world. Especially if you don't intend on being a "lifer".
In the Army if you don't choose an MOS before basic, you're infantry. You're the man on the ground with a weapon.
The military life isn't for everyone, it wasn't for me. You may fall in love with the lifestyle, you never know.

if you're looking into machanics i advise against the army. working on tanks and bradlys isn't as fun as it sounds, parts are heavy, space is limited, and those things are always breaking down. plus you could count on going to war for at least a year in the army. if your looking for decent pay join as an officer.

There is always Nuclear Propulsion.6 year enlistment but the first year and a half is all school. I am a Nuclear Propulsion Machinist Mate on a submarine. Going on a six month deployment underwater in a steel tube with a few port calls to keep you sane isn't for everyone though. Luckily there are 18 months in between deployments. Advancement is good(I made E-5 in 2 years), reenlistment bonuses are even better(up to 90,000) and there are plenty of job opportunities if and when you decide to get out.

I didnt operate the In Flight Refueling systes, we repaired them along with the hydraulic systems.

Basically, you fix anything hydraulic, or pnuematic. You could end up in the back shop, overhauling the parts, or on the flightline doing the torubleshooting and remove/replace.

Ok, been thinking about some things and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go air national guard. Can you join the guard as an officer? And what are the benefits to that? I took a practice ASVAP and qualified for the heavy desiels (and even things like avionic radar tech).

I want to do guard because then I can come back here and finally go to college and stuff. That also leaves me close to the g/f so me and her can go slow and see how things go instead of thinking of rushing into thngs.

I'm still considering Army national guard (and maybe even active duty) but the active duty thing will have to wait for me to decide if its the right thing to do.

Now, what kinds of things should I be asking the recruiters to make sure I don't get screwed over? And is it possible to join the guard as an officer and what benefits come with that?

Thanks!

Dustin

Dustin,
I believe currently one has to have a college degree before being able to join any of the services as an officer.

The biggest thing to get from the recruiter is what your options are (they seem to change from year to year since certain MOS's are in more need of people than others at times). Know just who can make a committment to you in writing.

If you go the enlisted route, get the most technical training you qualify for and "want" to do for several years. The more technical you job / training, the better job you will get upon leaving the service. As for what benefits being an officer has, mainly pay (better, of course), but just as in the civilian world, the supervisor is in a better position than the worker-bee. BUT along with that goes the responsibility of the job (and the stress that goes with it) AND most importantly, the people working for you. Being an officer isn't all laid back enjoying life. The same as a non-commissioned officer, just at a slightly different level.

Bottom line, get the best and most training you can get whether or not you decide to make the service a career or not.

Well then joining as an Officer is out of the question.

It looks mostly like I'll be joining the Air National Guard. I scored pretty good on a practice ASVAP, so after I get some more of my stuff straightened out im off to a recruiter to take the actual ASVAP and then decide what EXACTLY I expect out of it all.

Thanks you guys! I know I'll be back in here with more questions later.

Good Luck, my friend. Let us all know what you decide .......

As a post note, the military was very good to me, but as one person said, a career isn't for everyone. Regardless of how many years spent in any of the services, I honestly believe that everyone would benefit from serving in the military for a period of time. And so would our country. As you might guess, I would fully support some sort of draft for some form of service to our country - military or otherwise.

But the best of luck to you - you'll do fine if you are asking questions BEFORE you sign on the dotted line.

Hey Dustin,

Once you get in and start doing whatever is is that you want to do - or close to what you want to do, start school at a community college with online or onbase classes as soon as possible. You can count your military training and basic training as credits towards your associates degree. Any base will have an education center with counseling available.

Once you have the associates, you might be able to get into a program where the service will pay you to go to the school of your choice full time and then go straight into Officer Candidate School.

This will mean BIG perks for you down the road as well as more money which, by the way, is actually why we go to work anyway. It might be a pain in the buttox to get there but it will pay off big in the end.

I was in the AF in the intel field. It was sweet because all of the materials (including tech school) were classified. What does that mean? That you can't take home any work - no homework, no studying, nothing. Your time away from work was yours to do what you want.

Good luck,

Greg

The car started yesterday after 6 months of death. No exhaust is stupid loud and sweet for about 1 min. Get new exhaust gaskets and put the lights back in and I should be able to come meet ya in a week or so. All is pending parts availability.
