Inch Lbs !! :(
I was installing my camshaft caps and I set the torque wrench to 38 lbs like it says in the manual. I start to tighten one and it snaps off inside the head. So i look at the manual again and it says INCH LBS, not ft lbs. I didnt even know there was such a thing. Now i feel retarded and dont know how im going to get it out. Its broken off about 1/4 inch into the head. I want to drive this car off a cliff right now. I need to get it running first. How should i deal with this???

Anyone know the part number for the cam cap bolts? I think they are number 2 or 3 in this picture.

That SUX! Yeah, you need a torque wrench capable of very low values (7 in-lbs was a number I remember from my re-build) I didn't think fasteners could hold with that little torque on them.
Best of luck with the remainder of the re-build. Todd

Crap i just ordered them. I can probably call and change it.
Yea i found a different list or torque specs and it says 6.7 ft. lbs. The manual i have says 39-48 inch lbs. I thought it seemed high, so i set the wrench to 30 lbs. It was still enough to break one off. At least i didnt strip the head.

Ok thanks. Any ideas how i should get the broken one out?? Could i drill it out and re-tap it? Maybe i should take the head off and have someone else do it. Or throw it into the ocean and buy a used head.

ocean= artificial reef so it wouldn't be all bad Nah, I say bring it back to the machine shop who did the milling and see if they can get it out... dril and tap is a bad idea in aluminum against a steel bolt

Ok, I got everything back together and put the engine in the car. I started it, and now there is a thudding/clunking sound. It is a continuous sound that speeds up and slows down with the rpm of the engine. I can also feel it in my feet while sitting in the car. It does it while in park and while driving. Sounds slightly different when driving, depending on if there is a positive or negative load on the engine.
When i get out of the car and listen to it, it sounds like it is coming from the bellhousing, near the torque converter. When i stick my head down in there, i can hear an intermittent sort of clinking sound. Different from the other sound, but coming from the same general area. I drove the car home and it runs fine other than the noise/vibration. What could it be? Anyone? Anyone want to buy this car from me, cheap?

First thing is to check all four torque converter bolts to make sure they're tight. If that's not it?? Maybe a bad flexplate??

Also, did you use the original bolts for the torque converter? They have a shallow head.

I used the original bolts and tightened them to specs with a tq wrench. I also looked at them after the sound started to make sure they were still ok. I didnt check them with a wrench though. I will check tomorrow, i dont know how they could have gotten loose though. It didnt seem like i tightened them very much. Maybe my tq wrench is off. Still, i dont see how that would cause a thudding sound like this.

Does it make the sound if you turn the engine over by hand?
