Talking Finally picked it up - pics inside!

Well after a week of waiting i picked up my SVX. Car runs perfectly, everything works. Tranny shifts well, wheel bearings are good, all aspects of the car function as intended, except the tranny over-heats. At least I think it does, i'm just going off what i can smell. After about 15miles or 20-30min at a good speed, i start to smell something burning. I stop the car, shut it off, wait 10min, start back up, and it's fine for another duration of that time. If anyone has insight as to what that may be please let me know.

There was a smudge on the camera lense apparently, so there's a fuzzy spot on the pics, but you can still see pretty well. Here they are:

I'm happy with my purchase.

According to the manual, the AWD SVX's come with Automatic Transmission Fluid Temperature Warning Light. It says:

Quote:
The light will result from speed being low but engine speed being high, such as up a hill. It says it's unnecessary to stop the vehicle, but avoid driving up steep grades or in stop and go traffic. If you do stop the vehicle, keep the engine at idle speed. This helps the transmission fluid cool more quickly. The warning lightwill go out once the transmission fluid has cooled down.
Only thing is, no such light came on when i was driving. The smell came around when in heavily populated areas, where speed was reduced, and there was more gas and brakeing going on.

Car looks nice.

Can you describe the smell at all?? Oil, ATF, Brakes, Gas, Gear Fluid, Coolant all smell different...

Or try to localize a smoke source???

There is a meet at TomsSVX place in Philly on Sunday, I'm sure someone there can help ID it.

Also, have you seen the info on the Reading meet? You have no excuse to miss it

Buy a transmission cooler and new filter to fix your suspected tranny problems. Total cost will be around $125 for parts and installation at a shop.

Or since you just got it, (assuming you bought from a dealership) it probably just got a fresh oil change and they may have spilled some on the engine or exhaust. Give it a few days to all burn off. If the smell's still there, something's wrong.

These cars tend to smell hot. I would do what has already been mentioned as far as trying to locate the smoke or strong smell. Remember that the PS uses tranny fluid and if it is leaking a little, it will smell like it has come from the tranny. Check the dip stick and smell that. Does it smell burnt, or like it should? I would do a fluid change soon to make sure it is good fluid. Then add the cooler and filter.

What year is the car? Pics are good and the car looks great. Good luck.

Already signed up for the reading meet. I plan to do a tranny cooler install soon as i get the chance. I have the writeup for it already, just need some decent weather and a friend of mine to get some free time, second set of hands is helpful. The burning smell, well it smells like burning, not easy to explain. I want to try to make it to toms tomorrow for his thing.

It's the 1994 AWD SVX. The smell thus far i can only smell from inside the car when driving, when i pull over and stop it goes away almost immediately.

Anyone that's gonna be at toms tomorrow going to have a driver side window switch?

Mine will smell if I do a bit of power driving, or uphill.
The Driver's side Valve Cover is leaking into the tray, and if the angle is right, then the tray will leak backwards, onto the exhaust.
If I take it easy driving, or I park with the nose in a downward angle, then I have no indications of the smell.

Take a look at your Valve Covers. That may help.

I hadn't even thought of a valve cover gasket leak. I will check into that. Thanks

cam seals will leak while the car is driving (higher RPMS more leakage) this could also be the problem

Another very comon thing that occurs is a leak in a host in the PS system and it drips on a hot surface. Check all of the leaks if there are any and see if that is the problem.

When I want to go 5mt? Busy this afternoon? as far as funding goes, i'm saving every dime i can, and should be ready june/july. I'm moving in with a friend may first, so bills will go down a LOT. Plus promotion may first, so i'm good for that too. I'd like to have it for my trip to texas the first weekend in august. The smell is pretty much non-existant long as i baby it, but the tranny shakes when i'm in drive not moving, gotta shift to neutral when sitting or it shakes like hell. Cruising i guess it's still there, but not as apparent. It shifts perfectly into and out of all gears, so honestly i'm not sure what it is. The rattle/shake worries me though, so i'm gonna push to get it done sooner rather than later. If you can get me a final price including major parts(tranny, rear, clutch, etc) it would be greatly appriciated. I'll probably ring you later tonight. I'd love to get it done before reading but i won't have funding that soon, and i doubt you'd have time.

Also when it eventually goes down i'd like to hang out and watch, as i've never done any tranny work before, only engine, if it's ok with you.

price all depends on the transmission you choose. Then add about $300 for a new clutch.

$2k for the install, shift linkage, X-member, driveshaft, clutch master, pedals...etc. Sure you can come and help... I could always use an extra hand

From what i've read it there's not many trans i can chose from. Forester/legacy 5speed or wrx 6speed isn't it? What can hold the hp, is affordable, and is reliable? I thought you needed a driveshaft as well for the 5speed...
