ROLEX 24 Hour Race, 2007

I had the great opportunity to attend this year's ROLEX 24 Hour Race at Daytona International Speedway. My oldest son, Tom, crews for a BMW Team that runs in the Grand Am Series (BTW, Grand Am is now owned by NASCAR!), and they ran in the three hour race on Friday before the 24 Hour race, beginning on Sat. Unfortunately, they fell out of the three hour race at about 1 1/2 hours due to a broken oil pump. But they were doing well in the 106 car field before losing oil pressure - they started at the back due to electrical problems during qualifying but moved up to 81st before dropping out. The car number, BTW, is #64, a black BMW 325 series. BTW, I believe this race will be on the SPEED Channel on March 10.
Anyway, as great as the Grand Am Race was (some fast cars, our BMW was clocking over 145 MPH on the front straight and they were not the fastest by any means), the 24 Hour Race is just unbelievable. They have put a "kink" in the back straight to "slow" the Prototypes down a bit - without the kink (called the "bus stop") the prototypes were hitting over 230 MPH. With "pit credentials", there were few places we could not go, and it was amazing to see these cars up close being prepared for the race, etc. But I won't bore you with the details, but rather refer you to a web site where my son posted a few of the photos I took while there.

Thanks for the link Harry. I watched 10+ hrs of that race on Speed. The Prototype class had a pretty close finish for a 24hr race. I'm sure it was a blast!
