Are our cars that fast???

First of all, this is not a racing thread, pls I really hope it will be considered professionally as such.

I convinced my friend recently to purchase a mint and exceptionally low mileage 97' Impreza GT Turbo (or WRX in your language with 25K certified miles!!!) at a slight higher price (the car was sitting in a private garage and barely being driven).

Because he is so obsessed, he asked to change the whole exhaust system (was a little rusty) and overhaul the entire turbo unit, change brake pads, rotors, gas shocks, oil, spark plugs, short shifter, etc... costing him near $2K.

After that we went to test his car and I took mine, cruising near each other on the highway at around 50mph, I signaled him to push it. We both engaged at second gear and high rpm (I saw 6500 on my odometer) and we pushed both ours. I thought he should pass me easily especially on low speeds, but he kept by my side until we reached high speeds when I started taking pace ahead of him...

After another turn, the same happened! we both couldn't figure it out (he reached 7000rpms!), he has a lighter car with approx the exact amount of power... and BOOSTED with an excellent setup! He is also running on 1 Bar of boost instead of the 0.8 Bar originally set by Subaru.

My question is: IS that FREAKING NORMAL??? Are our cars that fast???

P.S: He is an excellent driver, he used to own a 1996 M3 with 321hp's but got fed up with RWD cars

I say it again, THIS IS NOT A RACING THREAD, I DON'T WANT IT TO BE CONSIDERED AS SUCH, FURTHERMORE WE HAVE SAME DRIVING RULES AS THE GERMAN AUTOBAHN (NO RULES!!!) NEVER TRY IT OVER THERE... PLEASE

His car should have been quicker. Do you know what version engine his WRX has? Could have been the 280 bhp EJ20K, 250 bhp EJ20G, or 218 bhp EJ20K. I guess if he had the 218 bhp version, your scenario seems plausible.

Hope your thread doesn't get locked for "racing" since it is still on public access roads and therefore dangerous.

I don't think that would be considered a dangerous action, in Lebanon, he didn't shoot any one.

I suppose the svx's long legs make up for the overall power advantage. Keep in mind his final drive and tire circumfrence, as well as the effect of drag when figuring who's faster after a certian point.
Im quite sure the lighter more powerful car would have you off the line easilly, but with a rolling start as such, it about evens out

I can't compare with an older WRX, but my fiance has an '02 WRX with a light tune and it KILLS my SVX. It is really no contest, so something may not be right with your friend's car.

my wife's '02 WRX made my SVX seem slow, but now my LGT makes her WRX seem slow.

the balance of power (me having more ) is restored.

On the race track, my car is a little bit faster down the straight than stock 02-03 WRX's. This would be accelerating from 50-60 mph to 100+. Pulls away faster at the higher speeds. Probably would get them from very low speeds also, before their turbo's have a chance to spool up. They actually should be best coming out of a medium speed turn, as their rpm's would already be high. Even so, I'm fastar, but not stock

No.

But then again I don't think WRXes are "that fast" either... so who knows.

(slowly waiting for the day I actually get to drive my "that fast" car)

Mine is. And I will have the dyno numbers and a drag slip to prove it over the next few weeks.

are there any guesses at what you might see at the track for a 1/4 time, tom or mike?

Have you run it at the track?
I pulled off a 14.08 with a 9lb pulley, a slipping belt and the older software. The version of software you have should do you better then that.

I'm hoping to make a couple passes tomarrow. If the weather permits.
