So... long story short : do I most likely have a 4.11 auto trans on my hands, or a 4.44 - i wanna know before i install the wrong rear diff... just any educated guess would be fine

I bought one of those for itsjusteric's car. I told you its probably a 4.11 but unless you pop the front diff off (all those 14mm hex heads around where the bell housing meets the oil pump.) You cannot be sure

okay, FINAL question, I promise, then I'll go away:

I'm just going to go ahead and find a 4.11 diff - specifially a 95 impreza or most auto outbacks/leggacies should be fine to source from, yes?

eh, theres a salvage yard with tons of subies in it, they're local and have always treated me right. i'm going to double check my new trans to count the gear teeth (how many = 4.11?) and do the same with the diff, just so i dont have to do this all over

Hey,
Just a heads up...you might have some wiring to do. I bought my 4.11 from the same place, and some of the harness was cut Other than that, I cant complain...it was a very, very new tranny with a 3 month warranty.

While you have the car apart, you will probably want to look into filling the trans mount with polyurethane. You'll also want svxfiles to make you his special 4.11 trans resistor to firm the shifts up and prolong the life of the trans

Yeah thats a 4.11 like what Eric got. I highly suggest doing 1 thing above all else. That is buying the shift resistor from svxfiles. It is a shift kit (kinda) which will prolong the life of that 4.11. I also suggest a fairly large trans cooler if you don't already have one in series with the factory rad cooler (there is a reason its in the radiator). Now if you have a problem finding a 4.11 5 bolt sideplate rear, I just found one in my shop tonight (looking for my 4.44 I found a 4.11 too) Anyway, if you need one in a hurry I can get it to ya

Tom

Hey thanks for all the help. There were five trannys there and I picked the one with the least rust, a new oil pan, and all wires and connectors intact; even took an extra dipstick just in case.

Tom, if you want to send me that 4.11 rear that'd be excellent. just let me know how much you want for it and I'll send you a money order ASAP - PM for address and such - time is of the essence
