Brilliant red paint fading

I have just bought a '97 SVX with brilliant red paint (is that the same as Barcelona red?). The paint on the wing morrors and the plastic rear panels is fading. There has been discussion of this on other threads, but no-one has offered a solution to the problem. Any suggestions?

No it isnt the same color. The Barcelona red is a darker (not orangy) red color. I have a 94 that is Barcelona and the mirrors and spoiler are fading as well. Several coats of wax helps bring it back some. I put about 3 coats on the mirrors and spoiler to every one coat to the rest of the car. However I fear it's a losing battle. I plan to repaint the car in an even darker shade of red. I'll use a more modern type of paint with a nice thick clear coat and hopefully that will prevent future fade issues.

I'm in the same boat as Mike, my rear quarter plastic trim is staring to mildly "craze" the paint. A good wax helps cover it up and protects it. But ultimately a paint job is whats going to need to happen. But regular washing and waxing will help. I usually wax every other wash job and use one of those spray waxes on the roof, trunk and hood every "non-wax" wash.

Hi Dave,

I was watching that car. I thought it was probably you that bought it.

What's it like - apart from the paint fade? Are you taking it to the JAE?

Phil.

I had mine painted a few years back. Custom matched to the rest of the paint rather than original paint (does have a little more metallic in her but the rest has faded somewhat too I would suspect). Cost me about $400 to get done from a friend who was working for a paint shop. My guess is you'd be looking at $600 or so from a reliable shop to do it right though as I got the friend and work discount!

How many tubes of coppertone sunscreen would it take to coat an SVX?
