The nut in the center of the tensioner pulley. To move the pulley and loosen the belt, you first need to loosen the nut in the center of the pulley about one turn, then loosen the long bolt that actually moves the pulley. After reinstalling the belt and using the long bolt to tighten the belt, you need to tighten the nut in the center of the pulley to "lock" it in place.

Here ya go Chris, this is the locking nut...you have to loosen it then adjust the belt, and once it's adjusted, you have to tighten it back up, to hold it in adjustment.

It's not a "lock nut" in the traditional sense.

That is correct...it is a "Locking Nut" not a "Lock Nut"

Hmmm .... Ummmmm, what would happen if, when someone was attempting to tighten the belt, they forgot all about the locking nut??? What would happen if you just turned the bold that moves the pully?? Think that would be the cause of me going through so many belts?

hhmmmmmm.....yep....if you're not tightening the locking nut after you set the tension, it will just work loose over time.....adjust it, then tighten the lock nut, and you'll probably be fine

It sounds like the locking nut is loose and the belts loosen off, slip and burn up.

So I'll do this when I get home and see if it fixes everything... Ya don't think that I may have damaged the locking nut by not loosening it first before tightening the tensioner?

I'd be more worried about the tensioner assembly. If the pulley is allowed to wobble there's a chance it may break the assembly the pulley mounts to.

Well, I hope that this doesn't jinx me.... But I took the belt off and spun all of the pulleys (PS, Alt, and tensioner). The PS pulley rotated smoothly about 3 revolutions, then some resistance built up. I imagine that this is normal (pumping fluid). The alternator pully spun normally. The tensioner pully really was nice and smooth, and had no problem spinning...

I replaced the belt and tightened everything down (including the locking nut this time). Took it for a test drive and everything was nice and quiet... I am gonna give it atleast a week before I get too happy... Possibly if I get the $$$ I will go do the upcoming AutoX in Greenville, NC on the 23rd and use that as the main test

I sure hope that this worked though Would save me some money and time for sure

Re: WTB : Powersteering Pump and Tensioner Pully

Resurrecting this thread from the dead. Does anyone know if a special type of nut is required for the "lock nut?" Mine has fallen off completely after not touching the belt for well over and after experiencing no squeaking.

Any other tips for replacing it would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!
