Tragedy on the largest scale......
Saturday we had a monsoon. Basically four inches of rain in 24hrs. I was at my brothers house through most of it and of course I was driving the SVX. We left at about 11:30pm and drove through some of the worst rain and hail I have ever seen. I decided to stay off the highway because of hydroplaning issues and maniac drivers.
The side streets were basically flooded and after driving through one or two pond sized puddles I found myself trapped. Finally I cut down another side street where only one more puddle stood between me and higher streets. The SVX did not make it. About halfway through it sputtered and died. Luckily I had enough momentum to get out of the water. We sat for an hour until we found someone willing to jump us off. No luck. Finally I had the car towed at 2am. This morning I get a call saying that my car is hydrolocked!!! He said my air filter looked like a sponge. I called my insurance and they are towing it to a shop. So we will see. At this point I am only going to be out $500 for the deductible. I am just afraid they will mess up my car or that irreversible damage has been done to the motor. If anyone has information that can ease my nerves and grief it would be greatly appreciated.

Leo, golly! I hope everything turns out fine. I'm sure Beav could shed some light on this situation . . . good, bad or indifferent. Best of luck, pal.

Time May Be Running Out
I think more information is needed. When you got a jump start, exactly what did the starter/engine do?? If the starter did not engage the fly wheel then your engine should not have internal damage since you did not mention any severe sounds or vibration coming from the engine before it died. If your engine did take in water as the tech claims it is very important to pull the plugs, change the oil, and have someone who knows what they are doing to make sure ALL water is out of the cylinders and crankcase before a re-start. Considering this is Monday you should have this done ASAP. I hope the mech who did the initial diagnosis was just attempting to take advantage of the situation and the next inspection only shows a water logged air filter and wet ignition sys. In regard to your $500 deductible, this sounds kinda high. Since you did not collide with anything and no one collided with you, your claim sounds like it should fall under your comprehensive coverage and USUALLY that deductible is less than your collision deductble. Comprehensive coverage is sometimes called O.T.C.(Other Than Collision). Yes, read your policy. Please remember I am not interpreting your auto policy nor am I giving you advice since I am not an attorney. I have not handled claims in TN nor am I licensed in that beautful state. John Valos

Re: Tragedy on the largest scale......
i seam to remember this happening a lot w/ older cars. I cant remember if it was because the distributer would get soaked or water going up the intake.
You shouldn't have too much dammager to your car. The main reason it kicked out was because the water got up into the cylinder and wouldn't alow for a spark. My guess is that if they take out the plugs, open up the engine as much as possible and put some hot air in there, all the water will evaporate, and you should be fine. So I think, but hey, it's wishful thinking |

I wouldn't worry too much, I once had a neighbor in Fl. that dunked his pick-up in the family sand pit - about 25' down. He was still driving the truck 5-6 years later.
Main thing is to get it flushed out ASAP. Have them flush the oil several times (with a new filter each time.) The difficult part is the sensors, they don't take to water very well. They should replace those all now, TPS, O2, MAP, MAF, etc. Don't forget to have tranny and diffs flushed also. Have them check all of the lights, if the housings take on water the sockets will go bad, the chrome will rot from the reflectors, etc. Poking a small hole in the bottom of the muff and resonator probably a good idea also. If the water got inside the cabin have the seats removed and the carpets pulled up and dried to avoid rot/mildew/rust. When you get the car back drive it a couple hundred miles as soon as you can. Two things will happpen: you'll find out if the car's going to crap out (and when it doesn't you shouldn't have anxities about that anymore) and the sustained heat will dry out whatever residual moisture remains. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate mishap. I'm hoping and guessing it's nothing serious, as I had a friend who did something similar. He continuously ran his explorer through a deep puddle of watery mud for fun. I was with him and eventually it died, as we were both laughing histerically.
Anyway, the engine compartment was caked in thick mud and dripping wet. We kept trying to restart it and it kept dying. Eventually we made it home with a few stalls and stutters. After washing the engine off in a self-spray car wash, no problems. Point being, it seems like it's hard to seriously screw up a car running it through water. Best of luck, Dave.
