Transmission fluid

Hello,
I'm sorry for my english...
Did you have replaced the transmission (gearbox) fluid? Which fluid had you used? Do we have to change filter also? And differential fluid? How many fluids do we have to change? Please get me a tuorial about this.
Thanks!

Yes. It is very important to keep the transmission oil "fresh" By that I mean it should smell like new. It should not be brown in colour, smell burnt, or leave anything more than a pink stain on a paper tissue. If the tranny oil is worn out [usually by heat] it will not cool properly, and your gearbox will wear out quickly. It is expensive to fix, so you need to keep it maintained.
Which fluid had you used?
Dexron II is the recommended grade. Some people use Dexron III, which is synthetic. I think it is best to stick to the recommended Dex II, provided you keep the oil changed and fresh. Minimum, you should change it at 100K Kms, and keep a regular check on it, particularly if you do not have an additional oil cooler installed for the transmission. The manual states that you should change it every 24k kms if you are driving in "severe" conditions. Many, many USA owners do this to keep the gearbox right.

Do we have to change filter also?
Some cars only have a magnetic type filter in the sump, later cars are fitted with a filter on the valence of the car, left hand side. I would replace this canister if changing at 100K, but it should not require replacement otherwise, unless your transmission fails, in which case replace the filter with the refurbished transmission.

And differential fluid?
There is a front and a rear differential. As far as I know, there should be no need to replace the diff oil. On the other hand, if your car has high mileage, they do not hold much fluid, front or rear, so it could be a good idea to replace all this for peace of mind. {The service manual recommends an inspection and top-up at 48K kms. It also suggests replacing the oil at this interval if the car is driving in "severe conditions"}

How many fluids do we have to change? Please get me a tuorial about this.
Engine oil and filter obviously. The manual recommends every 7.5K kms. It is up to you how often you feel the need for changing the oil, but it is expensive to change that often. You should use fully synthetic oil, and you will probably only need to change it once a year, but keep an eye on how black it gets.

The gearbox oil is important to keep correct. Don't over-fill it. Make sure it stays a nice clear pink colour. Replace it every 48k kms, or twice as often if you are driving in severe conditions.
Severe conditions include very hot, very cold, on salty roads, near the sea, lots of short journeys or city driving, driving in hilly country, particularly in hot climates.

Replace the differential oil, front and rear, at least at 100k kms, and every 50K after that. Use SAE 75W/90 or 80W/90 oil. Grade is GL-5. Stick with the one manufacturer, because they vary.

Thanks!

When the mechanics are changing your transmission fluid, insist that they do not perform a "reverse flush" on the oil cooler in the radiator. It can send particles back to the transmission, and cause rapid failure.
Last point: fit an additional transmission cooler, if your car does not already have one.

End of tutorial!!! Now go and do your homework!

Joe

Before installing my tranny cooler the trans fluid would turn brown in a week or two, now it's been a nice fresh red since summer. Best $50 I ever spent on a car.

It can be done by you! It is much cheaper that way and you know that it is done right.
