Power output on stock stereo

Anybody know the output per channel (Watts) on our systems? I did a complete search and can't find a thing on it.

(Some great ideas for subwoofer upgrades though.)

Ah ha! A question no one can answer.

It's going in my "Trivial Pursuit, SVX edition" game.

I believe I read it was either 80 watts total or per channel. I'm not sure though.

I thought I saw a showroom brochure sold on here recently, that should have the answer.

I have researched all of my SVX brochures, both from thee US, Japan, Germany and Canada.

It is sometimes mentioned without power specifications, such as
"6 speaker Electronically-Controlled ETR AM/FM Stereo Cassette with Compact Disk Player"

The later brochures say simply "Concealed 80 watt AM/FM Stereo with Auto-Reverse Cassette"

My best guess is that it is 40 watts/channel for a total output of 80 watts.

(If it were more, I'm sure Subaru would brag about the 160 watt stereo.)

6 speakers 4 channels, so 20W x 4 peak, RMS is probably around 5-7W per channel. I tossed out the front speakers long ago, but I believe they were rated at something like 8-10 watts. Nothing to brag about really for a factory system.

I sold my factory head unit, but I seem to remember seeing a 20x4 designation somewhere on the front panel...or maybe it was on a label on the body?

20x4 is correct

Compared to many of the other stock stereos in the early 90s, its actually quite good

So, going from there, being as I have installed a WRX 6-CD changer unit, does anyone know what it is rated at?

I get the distinct impression that it could easily overload the stock speakers in the car. I've never turned the volume past 7.

The N Word Is...?

Klaatu! Verrata! Ni*coughcough*... hm, it was definitely an 'N' word...

Nicotine?

Am I correct in understanding the door speakers are 6.5s? So if I'm looking for a direct after market replacement I'm looking for at least 20 watt 6.5s?
Thanks,
WGJ
