torque converter
ok so tranny went out a few weeks ago [big surprise there eh?]
got the new tranny from ebay ['97 legacy 88k - 99day warranty] my question is - whats the story on my old tc? shop said it doesn't leak and didn't have any debris but the shop of course indicated that my labor wage would double if they have to pull it back out after installing the 'new' tc from the legacy tranny is smaller than my old and cannot be reused so do i buy a new one at $167 local pick up a 'known good' one off ebay for $50 plus sh or trust my old one since the fluid was clean and its not leaking? -sau |

I would use the SVX torque converter but immediately flush the tranny. If the tranny is under warranty as you say it shouldn't be an issue to flush. Normally if there's a problem caused by flushing it will happen very soon.

well the tranny has a warranty but the labor doesnt
local shop is putting it in for 300 [aamco] if they have to pull it back out cause the tc doesnt work then that's 300x2 i'd rather not pay $600 a known good tc is $50 on ebay plus shipping... is the svx tc bullet proof - i honestly know nothing about the tc in a subaru my tranny went out - when cold it would engage but wouldn't shift from 2nd and once warm it lost all grip completely in every detent except park no drive no reverse nothing.... so i didn't know if its safe to assume the tc is ok cause there wasnt any metal shavings when they pulled it or safer to pay $70 to get a known working one shipped to the tranny shop and have them use that one... or of course go the full route and get either mine rebuilt or one from an auto parts store - about $200 either way -sau |

Torque converters.
The torque converters give no trouble, it is the lock-up clutch in there that can be suspect. You don't have a model, mileage or history in your profile, so I can't be sure.
Some of the early 92 US models had a lining on the clutch that tended to flake off and block the cooler and the lube passages in the box. As you lost the high clutch followed by the forward clutch, I would think that it had the oil pick up screen in the box blocked by lining debri, Dropping the line pressure. That said the SVX converter is stronger, so I would get them to drain the converter to see if there is any lining debri in there. If not use it, if there is don't use as it will continue to drop pieces into the new box. I'd get them to reverse flush the cooler in the radiator to ensure that it is not blocked. HARVEY.

Is the seller willing to pay for the labor to replace it if it turns out to be bad? I didn't think so. As always with ebay, Buyer Beware.
