9/25/05 SCCA at Verona, VA

I competed in the Blue Ridge Region SCCA solo-II autox today in Verona, VA. The event took place just 20 minutes from my house so I was able to sleep in late (9:30am) and still arrive with plenty of time to pass tech and walk the course several times before the 11am start time.

I competed in the G-Stock class where they were a total of 10 cars. We got a total of 4 runs each. I didn't go off-course or hit a cone once today and I kept getting faster during my first 3 runs (on my 4th run, I was within 0.3 seconds of my 3rd run).

My 4 runs were as follows: 58.231; 54.260; 53.467; 53.738

I finished 4th out of 10. 1st place was taken by Mark Eisenbies with a 46.7? (he always wins the class in his Saturn and competes Nationally), 2nd was by a co-driver in Mark's car (he ran a 49 something), and third was a driver in Golf GTI who ran a 50 flat. I edged out a driver in a red Taurus SHO (he ran a 53.8) while the others in my class ran 55 seconds and higher.

The course was much faster than Ripken last weekend, and on the back stretch, I was able to hit 6,000 rpms in 2nd gear (remember I have 4.44's).

The fastest time of the day was by a turbo Miata in SM2 that ran a 45.2. I was therefore within 8 seconds of the fastest time (last week at Ripken I was about 12 seconds off of the fastest time of the day! )

A friend of mine, Shawn, in his orange MazdaSpeed Protege ran a 46.7 to win DS - beat out several Impreza WRXs. Fastest Subaru of the day was a black '04 STI that ran a low 46.

Coolest cars IMHO that ran today were a brand new '05 Lotus Elise (ran a low 47), a beautiful Chevrolet Corvair (with a beast of a V8 in the rear - ran a 46), as well as an absolutely gorgeous Datsun 240Z (think he was running 47's). There was also an '03 Posche Boxster S, '03 Z06, Golf R32, Evo and several SRT-4's!!!1!!)

I'll post official results when they're up on the SCCA's website.

Here are some pics:

Chike,
Nice job! Told you to watch out for those Saturns! Do you have a drawing of the course? Looks like you had at least one sweeper!

Good job but remember, you're not even close to stock with that tranny. I'm gonna tell that SHO driver to have you taken apart piece by piece to get examined .

I think I actually beat a current national champ today by like .001 of a second. Cough... he was driving an HS Mini (current Champ in a GS Mini and last year in the HSer) who apparently just moved to the area so I'm SOOO GLAD TO BE OUT OF HS. Bill have you beaten those local yokel Minis yet??? It feels good even from 13 classes up! Believe it or not he didn't take PAX either which went to a SM X1/9.

Ben,
Mark Chiles was running with you? Yeah, he and his wife just got jobs/moved up to your neck of the woods. I'm not sure why he would have been running an HS Mini, as he's got a sponsored GS Mini S (granted the sponsorship is some Mini dealership down in South Carolina (?)). Yeah, he beat Brian Garfield by a couple of hundreths at Nationals (Brian beat him the previous week in the ProSolo finals at Topeaka). I'm wondering if he's getting ready for next season, as the supercharged version of the Mini (i.e. the GS version) is rumored to finally be reclassed up to DS (or is it BS?). I definitely think something is going on with the Minis, as I talked to Brian's father at the Subaru Challenge and he confirmed that Brian is selling all of his Mini S stuff and is going to run a 125cc shifter cart next season!

Congrats on your time!

-Bill
p.s. I've beaten a couple of Minis over the course of the season - but only those with relatively inexperienced drivers
p.p.s. I sent you and Dave a PM about the tires....

I wish. Unfortunately there's no drawing of the course on-line. They didn't even have a picture of it up on a dry erase board.

The course essentially ran like this: From the starting line you entered a 4 cone slalom that ended in a tight hairpin. From there you entered two low speed turns followed by the long sweeper you see in the last pic of my car. You then entered a 3 cone slalom that led into an on-camber banked decreasing radius sweeper (you can see it to the left of Shawn's MazdaSpeed Protege). The course then had two light turns that you could take at WOT followed by a long straight-away that ended in a hairpin that went around a single cone! You then went into another shorter straight-away followed by a tight left-handed sweeper and then went straight to the finish!

Yeah the Saturn drivers were killer. I felt like I had a 52 second run in me today, but the limiting factor was definitely my driving skills. The handling of this car far exceeds my driving abilities at this time. Next season I'll be faster...

I know the trans isn't stock, but it's made by Subaru! I must have gotten over 10 compliments today about my car. The two guys who teched it were both amazed by how clean it was. They also said it's been years since they had one compete in their region. Also, a bunch of people in the crowd came up to me in the parking lot after my heat and said they just loved the sound of the flat 6 as I attacked the course. After I posted my fastest time in my 3rd run, I sat in 3rd place until the GTI driver pulled out a 50 flat in his fourth and last run! I almost got a trophy!

I wish. Unfortunately there wasn't time for any fun runs at the end. I was talking to the owner of the Porsche Boxster S a lot. I would have asked him for a ride for sure!

Wounded Minis huh? How many tacks does that take?

Still gloating over my raw time .02 second quicker around the cones then Mark Childe's (current G Stock National Champion) . The sad thing is I'll probably be telling my grand kids about it .

Ouch Bill! Talk about rubbing salt in my wounds!

I'll probably do one more autox before the year is out depending on family committments. The Blue Ridge SCCA club is having an event on November 5th in Lexington, VA which is about 50 miles from my house.
