1992 transmission won't shift to third

Hi, I just purchased a 1992 SVX with 111,000 miles. I got it cheap because the transmission does not want to make the 2 - 3 shift. The fluid looks clean, so I thought maybe it could just be an electronics problem. As long as you stay on the throttle it stays in 2nd gear. As soon as you let off ( over 35 mph) it comes out of gear and does not go back to second until you slow down.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Steve Hart

Yes Steve the high clutch is not working, comes on in 3rd and 4th. I don't think it is anything else other than the clutch itself. If it was an electronic problem, you would only have 3rd gear. You say the fluid looks clean, it should be brown to burnt if it is slipping, may be it was flushed out to sell it?

This happens with some early models, the linings flak small pieces off that block the oilcooler in the bottom of the radiator, this stops the oil flow to the gearsets which overheat to destroy the high clutch.

It looks like it is terminal.
Harvey.
