A few Jeeps and 4x4 trucks were the only things out there on the way over; on the way back there was a T-bird in a ditch. No way THAT car should have tried the mountain tonight. The road was completely white, no scraper or cinders, about two inches of snow with sleet on top. I don't care what anyone says....Impreza's are great bad-weather cars. Having good ice/snow tires doesn't hurt either. Don
Be careful out there, Don. There's something omenous about the words, "ice, snow, mountains, ditches, etc." Remind me to bore you with the story about, "Me, freezing drizzle, RWD Fiat 128, 40 miles, dark, curves, hills etc." That was the time I think I truly learned "How to Drive".
Ron.

For me it was in 1970 in a (borrowed) RWD Datsun 510, 2 inches, bald tires, (really HOT) date. I think we pushed (with the wheels spinning in first gear) that thing up every hill in Iowa City that night. I think it was the last night I saw Joyce, too.

Icy reception...

I really have to thank the US Navy for helping me learn about driving in slippery conditions. I had to take my turn driving the pickup truck assigned to our division in Iceland. No weight in the back, manual on the column, "snow" tires ('72). I didn't become a WRC driver, but I did learn a HEALTHY respect for low-grip situations. Gear down (it was easy to use only 1st and 2nd last night...no one was behind me!), allow plenty of room from the vehicle ahead, no sudden moves, believe there is an egg between your foot and the brake, and above all...be SMOOTH. Like last night, I planned my move around the T-bird long before I got to it, so I did not have to make any major turns of the wheel under VERY slippery conditions.

The only time I have ever be stopped on that mountain was a true ice storm. There was an inch or two of pure ice on everything; you could have held an Olympic event on the road itself. I had the Swift with Blizzaks and after reaching the ridgetop, realized that things were even worse up ahead; that I was asking for big trouble if I tried to continue. I tried to turn around in a driveway, but slid backwards down a dip in it for about 20 ft. I continued to back uphill passed the dip until I lost all grip. Then I slowly accelerated back into the dip and up onto the road, yanked the wheel and slid sideways to a stop in the middle of the road. I then decended the mountain VERY SLOWLY until I got home, kissed the ground, praised the Lord, and made a promise never to take on pure ice again.

The safest way to drive in bad conditions, is to not drive to begin with!

You got that right. I was fishtailing up a steep grade on my way to work from Settle to Glasgow (KY). There was a milk truck that had run off the road and into a ditch. People were standing around, waiting. They had called a wrecker. How do I know this? Because as I was fishtailing up the hill, I noticed, what I thought was an 18-Wheeler fishtailing down the hill toward me. It was actually a Kenworth Wrecker that they'd called to pull the milk truck out of the ditch. Luckily, I zigged when he zagged and he zagged when I zigged and we missed each other. The only major problem caused by the ordeal was that I think I was constipated for a week!!

Slip sliding away. Riding thru PA on rt80 from NJ. Going to Jackson Hole for a ski trip while in college. I am not driving, my friend is, two more sleeping in the back seat. It was raining and the road was freezing. It was about 10 pm and after a long plateau came the down hill. ( near Lock Haven) A very long down hill. Traveling along at the speed of a car sliding on ice, about 40 mph. The brakes would not slow the car down. Watching cars in front of us. Tail lights, head lights, tail lights head lights sliding off the road. Passing another car in the ditch at the side of the road.

A guy starts to slide into our lane. Our driver turns the wheel franticly to the left. All the way until the steering wheel the locks. Our car is still going straight. Then in about 10 seconds it starts to turn and we clear the car next to us by about 3 inches at the back our bumper as the rear slide toward that car. Pass the car as the rear starts to fish tail to the right.

Our driver once again with rapid turns to the right. The car does not respond, take about 10 seconds and then starts to turn and fish tail again. After about 6 turns of the wheel completely from lock to lock with total lack of response from the car and fishing tailing in between, the car was finally going straight. Only about 6 near misses in all. Just one of those life experiences one can't forget about.

We went to look for a hotel but they was all booked.
After that the driver gave the car over to me and had a really hard time with me driving at 70 mph on a wet road, the ice was gone. After he fell asleep from his ordeal it was smooth driving.

This was a lot worse then time in Canada on snow.

ICE

I was driving through northern Vermont on the way to Sherbrooke, PQ in an ice storm similar to the one described above. Thankfully there was almost no traffic on the road, but after my car tried to get intimate with a certain guardrail a couple times, I decided it was time to pull over and take a break. I pulled into a rest stop (if you want to call it that, take the interstate up through northern VT and you'll see what I mean). Anyway, it was basically an ice rink, and I slid all the way through it without managing to slow the car down at all. Somehow, I managed to make it back onto the interstate at the other end without hitting anything, and just kept on driving. I think it took me about 18 hours to go 700 miles that trip

That is a law of nature. Things in motion tend to stay in motion until acted upon by another force.

However in this case the force was with you.
