The 'device' is an air freshner which was one of the dealer options for JDM models and was commonly fitted free by the dealer to the VL model like yours. Air Freshners are common in JDM cars because the Japanese as such heavy smokers.

Thanks Paddles,
Does it just stir the air around, or is it connected to the air conditioning system? Does it have somewhere I can put in 'essence of magic tree' or other 'perfumes'?

I think it is independent of the A/C and just refreshes the air within the car. I saw some filters for it on a Japanese auction site a few months ago, so it must have a changeable filter.

Hi

Any chance of some detailed photographs of the device? Now all we need is someone who had the optional JDM blinds!

Phil, Lars,
I can't seem to get the disk magazine out of the player. I have tried the reset button and the eject button but although there are various whirring noises and the head(?) appears to move from side to side, and the magazine moves up and down a few millimetres, it won't come out. Am I correct in assuming it should be lifted up to poke out of the top of the unit so that I can just lift it out?
Dave

It only moves when the slide door is closed. Close the door. Press the eject button. Wait until the button stops flashing. Open the slide door and the magazine should be at the top ready to remove.

Phil.

Phil, thanks - I have now managed to extract the magazine. It is a CA-MP128 and appears to have six slots for full-size CDs, but slots 7-12 appear to be for miniCDs!

Ours is the same. The UK CD changer is very similar to the JDM one. Some cosmetic differences, different buttons etc. But it's magazine takes 12 full-size CDs. At the club meet in Torquay a couple of years ago, Graham and I tested that the UK magazine fits the JDM player and vice-versa.

Phil.

Thumbs up Radio Gaga

I've got 2 UK spec Radio/Cassettes and 1 boot 12 CD changer that I have taken out - so, if you are interested make me an offer.

Does the UK spec radio come with RDS? Does it take up the full double DIN space?

Radio

I think iit has RDS EON TP etc etc, but I can't confirm that till I am in London early next week. All I know is both my cars are UK spec, both had the same double DIN item, and both radios worked until I removed them. also have decent Sony CD/Radio with wired remote that I would sell on. Will post info when I check it.

Happy to wait until you can check. I would probably be looking for the CD unit as well as mine is fine if the car is static but skips as soon as the car moves!

The tuner I have in the double din setup [tuner/tape above, single CD below] does not have any of the fancy tuner features, RDS, EON, TPS any of that fancy tuner stuff.

On the other hand, the single din unit in the UK car has so many features, the owner's manual has about 20 pages on it.

Due to the age of them, they may skip a bit over bumps etc. This could be due to there being a very small or non-existent buffer in the CD units. Big buffers were not common in 91/92.

If it's doing it a lot, then you need to use a "cleaner" disk, or some other means of cleaning the laser head. If it can't "see" properly due to dust and fluff, the software will make it jump about a lot. Worth trying to clean it to see what improvement you make.

Joe
