Help! Another Transmission

I have a 94 LSI that has been in perfect mechanical shape and an excellent exterior and interior. It has always been very well maintained. Yesterday, I started getting slippage in the trans. First ands even second seem ok. I'm not sure if it is third or fourth, but I get a lot more rpm's than I should and the motor races faster than the car is going. I let up on the pedal and that helps a little, but it's a struggle to regain the speeds over 40. I just did an error code check on the TCU and it gave a normal reading. Is this the end. While the car is near perfect, it has almost 160,000 miles on it and I don't want to spend $4000. Is there any possibility that it is some kind of transmission adjustment rather than a new one?

As was mentioned in a few other threads recently this is a sign your high clutch in the tranny has failed.

Thanks...does this mean I have to replace the entire transmission or could a transmission shop just replace the high clutch?

Honestly it's probably easier/cheaper to replace the transmission rather than replace the high clutch. Most places won't open up the tranny.

SVX trannies are expensive. See if you can find a tranny from another Subaru (w/4.11 differentials) for less.

Would it help at all if I unplug the resistor that moderates the line pressure? Where is it and how do I recognize it?

Unfortunately it's not going to help. For reference the resistor is mounted on the fender behind the battery.
