CV joint boots
To all,
The CV joint boots on both my front axles of my '92 SVX have ripped and need to be replaced. Does anyone have personal experience with replacing these joints with the seamed boots that do not require pulling the axles. I'm looking for both positive and negative experiences, so I know which boots to purchase. TIA, Thom C. |

I had one side go bad on me but I decided to replace both complete axles while I was at it. It's much easier to replace the entire axle.

I agree. Just replace the axles - replacing the boot takes the same amount of labor, and if the boot has been torn for any length of time the damage has been done.

I have always had the boots replaced, never the axles. I'm on my 6th or 7th set of boots on the front outers and have never had an issue with the joints in 230,000 miles.
The shop I use will clean out the joints and install fresh grease when they replace the boots. Costs about $180 for front axle service and new boots. I think the rears have only been done once or twice at the most. Just my 2 cents. Doug

I'm in greenville - are you trying to save installation charges or parts cost by only replacing the boots?
If you can cover the cost of new axles I'll gladly teach you how to put them in. It is actually pretty easy to replace them. I have done it quite a few times now.

Also if you need parts, I believe I got my Axle for about $100 with CVs. Shouldn't cost much more than that.

I'd take immortal_suby up on his offer. Replacing the halfshafts on my SVX was the easiest halfshaft replacement I've ever done. Everything is logical and straightforward and surprisingly, well, easy.

I had a torn CV boot on my SVX whe I bought it recently. I just replaced the entire axle. It's much easier than replacing the boot alone, and it's actually cheaper if you're paying for the labor, since the axle's like an hour job, whereas the boot's surely longer.

I don't have anything against replacing the entire axle. I just prefer to keep the stock axles because I don't trust the quality of the rebuilt units. Same reason I don't buy rebuilt alternators.
