Steering Oil Cooler
My steering fluid cooler started leaking, first thought it was just at bend next to the return hose but it turned out to have other leaks along the length of it.
Anyone else had this failure? I made a new cooler from 3/8" copper tuping and mounted behind and slightly below the radiator. It does not get the coolest air but it will get good flow around it and copper will transfer heat better than steel tubing. Anyone see any problem this might create? Can anyone tell me about the standard part? Is it just a single U-shaped tube or does is have more than one pass across the car? Does it have any fins? Has anyone changed one? What did you have to remove to do it?

It's fairly easy to get to once you've pulled the radiator (upper hose, lower hose, two bolts at the top of the radiator, lift the fans out - after disconnecting their electrical connectors, disconnect the lines from the transmission) - you might want to check the two flexible lines that connect to it. Both of mine were leaking where they clamped on to the hard line.

thanks
Bill
Thanks. I think I will hold off and combine with another job that requires radiator being pulled, but before next summer. New cooler is not too expensive. I replaced both hoses already as they seemed to be the orignal leak but the cooler quickly deteriorated after that. Ken

Ken,
You're welcome. And yes, the cooler is just a "u" shaped piece of tubing that runs right to left (as you're under the car looking up) across the a/c condenser. I think your cooper tubing fix is a good one. -Bill
